Library news

The Tamaqua Public Library will host a book signing, featuring author Stanley “Porky” Szczecina, on Sept. 15. The author of “Porky’s Shorts” will be at the library from 10 a.m. until noon. His newest book is a nonfiction collection of short stories.

The library also holds adult book discussions on the last Monday of each month. September’s book is “A Fall of Marigolds,” written by Susan Meissner. The novel weaves a connection between two women who once owned a scarf covered in bright marigolds and the tragedies they have witnessed.

Appraisal fair

The second Tamaqua Historical Society Antique Appraisal Fair will be held on Sept. 9 with an appraiser from the Lehigh Valley on hand to provide an expert opinion.

There will be a limit of three items per person, with a small per-item fee. All proceeds will benefit the Tamaqua Historical Society. The only exclusions are sports collectible cards, fine art and firearms.

The event will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Tamaqua Area Historical Society’s Museum Annex, 114 W. Broad St., Tamaqua.

Bloodmobile

An American Red Cross Bloodmobile will visit St. John United Church of Christ, Pine Street, on Sept. 12. Hours will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Walk-in donors are welcome.

Anyone 17 or older, who weighs at least 110 pounds and is in general good health, is eligible to become a blood donor.

Rush-Ryan seniors

The Rush-Ryan-Delano Senior Citizens met Aug. 28 at the Ryan Township Fire Company with 47 members in attendance. President Robert Neifert conducted the business session after opening the meeting with the invocation “My Old Front Porch Swing.”

Shirley Kaiser, returning member, and guests Fred Herb and Thelma Paul were given warm welcomes. Helen Trimmel and Larry Bower were to the sick list.

A moment of silence was held in memory of Gene Morrison.

Upcoming events include: Sept. 18, trip to Mohegan Sun Casino; Sept. 24, trip to the Bloomsburg Fair; Oct. 31, trip to Reading Diner; Nov. 8, military air show and buffet; Dec. 4, annual Christmas party at Capriotti’s in McAdoo.

Refreshments were served.

The group meets the second and fourth Tuesday of every month at the Ryan Township Fire Company in Barnesville and is open to anyone 55 or older.

TEPTO meeting

The Tamaqua Elementary Parent Teacher Organization will hold its first meeting of the 2018-19 school year on Sept. 11. The meeting will be held in the school library, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Hometown auxiliary

The Hometown Fire Company Auxiliary will meet Sept. 10 at Basile’s Restaurant on Route 309 in Hometown. The business meeting will begin at 7 p.m., but members are welcome to come early, at 6 p.m., for a Dutch treat dinner.

New members are always welcome.

St. John Lutheran

The Rev. Phyllis Wolford will officiate at the 9:15 a.m. Sunday service in St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Upcoming activities include: Monday, church council meeting; Thursday, angel choir practice at 6 p.m., shepherd choir meets at 6:30 p.m., chancel choir rehearses at 7:30 p.m.

The bell choir will meet at 8 a.m. on Sept 9.

Zion Lewistown

This Sunday’s service for will be held 10:30 a.m. at Leiby’s Grove. The Rev. Jim Williams will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. service this Sunday in Zion Church of the Lewistown Valley.

Next week’s activities include: Tuesday, fundraising committee meets at 6:30 p.m., preschool bard meets at 7:30 p.m.; Thursday, OWLs meet at noon, consistory meets at 6:30 p.m.

Harvest Home Sunday will be celebrated on Sept. 16.

Calvary Lewistown

The Rev. Susan Moore will officiate at the 10:25 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Calvary Evangelical Methodist Church in the Lewistown Valley. The service will include a celebration of Grandparents day and the promotion of Sunday school students. Sunday school classes meet at 9:15 a.m.
