Driver swerves to avoid herd of deer, hits pole
The driver of a sport utility vehicle was slightly injured early this morning when involved in a crash along Route 443 in West Penn Township.
The crash occurred at 3:30 a.m. as a man was traveling west when he said a herd of deer ran out in front of him. In an attempt to avoid hitting the deer the driver swerved to the right where he went off the road, hitting a utility pole and snapping it off. The SUV landed in a soybean field on the south side of the road.
The victim was treated at the scene by members of the Tamaqua ambulance and Lehighton paramedics before being transported to a local hospital. West Penn police officer Anthony Houser said he found blood on the roadway indicating the driver struck at least one of the deer.
The West Penn fire company No. 1 responded to the scene with their fire police maintaining traffic control at the scene.
