Free supper

Zion Lutheran church in Brodheadsville is again hosting a free community supper. It will be held from 5 to 6:30 tonight.

PV Open House

The Pleasant Valley High School will host an open house from 6 to 8 tonight.

Eldred leadership

The board of supervisors of Eldred Township will meet at 7 tonight at the municipal building in Kunkletown.

The Planning Commission will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at the municipal building.

Sub vets meet

The U.S. Submarine Veterans, Pocono Base, meets regularly on the third Wednesday of each month at the Wilson Fisher American Legion, Post 413, Old Route 940, in Pocono Pines.

Submarine veterans from all eras are encouraged to join. The group will meet tonight at 7.

Mission meeting

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church is hosting the last of its mission events at 7 tonight at Polk Township fire hall in Kresgeville. The topic is Hollywood vs. Faith. It features Frank Runyeon, who admits he has always felt torn between the world of media and the world of faith.

He says we want to live in both worlds, but is it really possible?

Zion Seniors

The monthly meeting of Zion Seniors group will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church complex. Anyone 50 or older is welcome. All are reminded to take a sandwich. Beverages are provided. There are minimal yearly dues.

Riders event

All bikes and cars are welcome at the American Legion Post 927 Pavilion, Fairgrounds Road, Gilbert — by the tank on 209 — from 5-8 p.m. Thursday.

Come hang out, show off your bike and have fun.

Music by Empty Pockets classic rock band. Food and beverages available. Top 3 Best Bikes Contest will be awarded at 7 p.m., 50/50 drawing at 7:30 p.m sharp.

The event is sponsored by American Legion Riders Chapter 927.

Lions meet

The Western Pocono Lions Club board of directors will meet at 6 p.m. on Thursday at Cherry’s in Kresgeville. The dinner meeting will begin around 6:30 p.m.

Altar & Rosary

The Altar & Rosary Society at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the cafe due to the parish mission event.

PVI events

The Pleasant Valley Intermediate School will have open house and a book fair from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday for fifth and sixth grades.

WELL meets

The West End Little League will have an open meeting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Chestnuthill Township Park in Brodheadsville.

Hunger action

September is Hunger Action Month. Join the Pocono Mountains Hunger Coalition and guest speaker Nancy Walters for breakfast and networking at the second annual Hunger Action Month and Pantry Appreciation Breakfast. It will be held at 9 a.m. Friday at NCC-Monroe Campus, Keystone Hall Room 202.

Chestnuthill Seniors

The Monroe County Seniors, Chestnuthill group, meeting in Zion Lutheran’s Fellowship Hall in Brodheadsville, can order cheese ravioli for Friday’s lunch and chicken piccata for next Wednesday.

They must call the site manager at 570-242-6770 by 11 a.m. the day before.

A special program, Senior Scam Prevention, will be presented by Katie Mumford, Business Development Specialist, at 10:30 a.m Sept. 26.

Bingo returns

The West End Park and Open Space Commission will host bingo night at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Chestnuthill Township Park on Route 715 in Brodheadsville. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.

There will be specials, pull tabs, door prizes and more.

Golf benefit

Monroe County Habitat for Humanity has announced its annual golf tournament. It will be held at the Great Bear Golf Club on Friday.

This is the 22nd such event, and through the past 21 years it has raised over $152,000, of which 100 percent has benefited the MCHH mission that everyone in Monroe County have a safe and decent place to live.

Kettle Creek dinner

The 27th annual dinner for Kettle Creek Environmental fundraiser will be held beginning at 6 p.m. Friday at Trout Lake on Twin Lake Road in Reeders.

The evening will include raffles, games and entertainment and winning films from the Kettle Creek Environmental Fund’s first film competition will be highlighted.

Flea market ahead

St. Peter’s UMC, Saylorsburg, will hold its annual outdoor flea market on Saturday. The church is located on Route 115 next to Dollar General.

Vendor tables are still available by calling 570-992-6930 and asking for Skip or Marie. The church kitchen will be serving lunch, beverages and home-baked treats. Flea market hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The rain date is Sept. 29.

Effort pantry

The food pantry at Effort UMC will be open from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday. A valid driver’s license or state ID with address proving residency in the West End is required.

Salem’s Fall Festival

Fun and food are but a part of the Salem UCC’s Family Fall Festival in Gilbert happening this Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.

Featured will be a basket raffle, an old-fashioned cake walk, the 10th annual car show and the music of Lenny & the Loafers with a repertoire of ’50s and ’60s music. Bring chairs is the church’s advice, and enjoy the music, food, that includes homemade apple dumplings and the fun.

Proceeds from the car show will benefit Valor.

CWU award

Nominations are now available for the 12th annual CWU Margaret Wyckoff Wells award. This award is given annually by Church Women United of Monroe County to a woman who has contributed to serving her local community through volunteer efforts and living out her faith. The award will be presented at the CWU December Christmas luncheon. Deadline for nomination is Oct. 30. Nomination forms can be obtained from Betty, call 570-629-0649.

In addition, everyone is invited to the two following events offered by Church Women United, the county’s church community, according to CWU secretary Betty Campbell, and the upcoming business meeting for the group at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 28 in the Eisenmann Room on the second floor in the Hughes Library in Stroudsburg.

The events are at 7 p.m. on Sunday at St. John’s Lutheran in Stroudsburg. There will be a service and music centered on the church’s stained-glass windows.

And at 4 p.m. Sept. 30, at Parkside Chapel, Route 191, there will be a hymn sing. She explains this is a summer chapel, so there is no electricity.

Organized in 1959, CWU is an ecumenical movement bringing Protestant, Roman Catholic, Orthodox and other Christian women together.

Banned books

The Western Pocono Community Library is celebrating Banned Books Week from this Sunday through Sept. 29.

At 6:30 p.m. Sept. 26, there will be a discussion of Madeline L’Engle’s banned book “A Wrinkle in Time.”

Polk Supervisors

Polk Township Supervisors will meet at 7 p.m. Monday at the municipal building in Kresgeville.

Registration day

The Western Pocono Community Library in Brodheadsville is hosting National Voter Registration Day from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Anyone not registered yet to vote can get help at the library.

The West End Republican Club will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Lakeside Restaurant, 5154 S. Hamilton Blvd. in Saylorsburg.

Those wishing to eat before the meeting are asked to arrive by 6 p.m.

Meals on Wheels

Drivers are needed for Meals on Wheels. The county’s program of Meals on Wheels has a waiting list of more than 60 consumers, as of the last tally, in need without service available. These consumers are mostly located in three locations, including the West End.

If you can help with delivery of meals, please contact the RSVP office at 570-420-3747 as soon as possible.

Poconos beautiful

From the Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau, via Eldred Township, comes word of Pick up the Poconos Day in Monroe County set for 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sept. 29, rain or shine

It is a countywide initiative, and various township have already signed up and requested certain roads for cleanup. In Eldred Township the roads for this year are Gower Road and Upper 57 Road.

Those picking up will meet at the municipal building at 9 a.m. and find light breakfast refreshments available before heading out. Once one’s section is done, participants can head home.
