A look back: Sept. 26, 1962
The new college for men to be erected by the Catholic Diocese of Allentown will be named Allentown College of St. Francis de Sales, it was announced today by the Most Rev. Joseph McShea, bishop of Allentown.
The name was chosen, it was stated, to represent the Diocese of Allentown in combination with reference to the Oblates of St. Frances de Sales who will staff the institution.
The new college, to be built in Upper Saucon Township on a 475-acre tract recently purchased by the diocese, is part of a $12 million expansion of educational facilities undertaken by the diocese. Also included in the program is the construction of three new high schools and additions to three others.
