Truck slides into mobile home

A mobile home in Blue Mountain View Estates in Lower Towamensing Township was heavily damaged Tuesday afternoon when a tractor-trailer delivering another mobile home slid down a hillside and into the home.

The truck was parked at the top of a trailer court that is located along the south side of a mountain.

According to reports from the scene, the unattended truck from Star Fleet Trucking in Goshen, Indiana, was delivering a mobile home when it began to slide on wet grass. Now, half of Mitch and Judy Hawk’s home is missing, and what remains is partially off its foundation. Hawk said authorities won’t let him go inside because it isn’t stable.

The truck crossed two grass lawns before slamming into a mobile home, knocking it off its foundation. One resident reported he was sitting at a picnic table just feet from where the runaway truck came to rest.

Mitch Hawk said he was at a doctor’s appointment when the incident occurred around 1 p.m. “I would have been there in that room, if I hadn’t been away,” Hawk said. “Thank God nobody was hurt.”

A parked SUV was destroyed in the incident.

No one was injured, but a service dog was missing overnight.

His wife, Judy, was in Florida at the time of the crash.

The couple has two dogs, who were both at home at the time. Judy Hawk’s Lhasa apso was found unharmed, but Mitch Hawk’s service dog was missing.

Hawk said his service dog, an English Labrador retriever named Sadie, helps to calm him, as he suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Hawk left a crate with water and food in the crate overnight and she was there this morning.

Hawk figures he has lost nearly everything in his house. The couple does have insurance, but the loss is devastating.

“I’m hoping we can stay with my son, who lives 6 miles away,” he said.

The Hawks inherited the home in June from his mother, Virginia, who passed away in December.

They had planned to be snow birds and fly south for the winter, spending time near their daughter who lives in Florida, and then come back to Pennsylvania and be with their son here in the summer. Now, they need to get a new home here, and the Florida plans are on hold.

State police at Lehighton are investigating the incident.
