USS Pocono

Chett Wilhelm will present a program on the USS Pocono at 6:30 p.m. today at the Heritage Center of the Western Pocono Community Library.

The center is located at the corner of Bond Lane and Routes 209/115.

Legion Auxiliary

The West End Memorial American Legion Post 927 Auxiliary will hold its monthly meeting at 6 p.m. today at the Legion home in Gilbert.

WEPOSC meets

The West End Park & Open Space Commission is slated to meet at 6:30 p.m. at the Chestnuthill Township Park Building in Brodheadsville.

PVEN Board

The Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network board of directors will meet Thursday at 10 a.m. at Zion Lutheran in Brodheadsville.

Mission meal

West End Mission Meals will be serving a free meal from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church in Gilbert.

Soccer league

The West End Soccer League will be at the PV Varsity Bears soccer game Thursday beginning at 6:30 p.m., with the soccer game itself beginning at 7 p.m. in the stadium.

The PV Girls Senior night is from 7 to 10 p.m. on Friday.

On the group’s calendar also is the Knights of Columbus Annual Soccer Challenge on PV fields from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday.

School board meets

The Board of Education for the Pleasant Valley School District is slated to meet at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Pocono Old Tyme

Club meeting for this group is at 7:30 p.m. the second Thursday of the month. All are invited.

The meetings are in the New Museum Building meeting room on the West End Fairgrounds in Gilbert.

WELL board

The West End Little League has a board meeting on the calendar for 7:30 p.m. Thursday. The group meets at the Chestnuthill Township Park. It is a closed meeting, with only the board of directors members invited.

Next Thursday, at 7:30 p.m., is a league meeting. That is open to all.

Lunch choices

Seniors attending the Chestnuthill Senior Center held at Zion Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall in Brodheadsville, can choose to have pierogies for lunch on Friday or chicken Marsala next Wednesday.

Call the site manager one day in advance by 11 a.m. at 570-242-6770.

A special program, Online Safety for Seniors, will be presented by Monroe Regional Health Care Coalition, Doris Roman, LSW, at 11 a.m. on Friday.

PTO Bear walk

Friday is set for the PTO Bear walk in the Pleasant Valley School District. In the event of rain the walk will take place Saturday.

Interesting stats

West End Volunteer Fire Company Chief Don Zipp shares that for September the volunteers had 23 calls for service. This puts the year to date at 404 calls for service.

He explains that while the volume for the year to date is up 11 percent, September was down, versus last year, by 44 percent.

Owl banding

Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center’s Project Saw-whet Owl Banding Program with Pocono Avian Research Center along with Pocono Avian Research Center will host the fourth season of Project Owlnet.

The station will be open to the public from 8 to 10 p.m. Friday as well as Oct. 19, 26 and Nov. 2. Donations welcome at the event.

Preregistration suggested.

Habitat sale

Monroe County Habitat for Humanity will be holding a fall warehouse sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday at The Mountain Center, 354 Memorial Blvd., Tobyhanna.

Effort pantry

The Supplemental Food Resource Center at Effort UMC will be open from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.

A valid driver’s license or state ID with address proving residency in the West End is required.

Ross tour

The Ross Township Historical Society has a historic tour planned for this Saturday. Those interested should meet at the township building at 11 a.m. for tour instructions. Some are cemeteries and some are homes.

The event is free but donations will be accepted.

Smart driver course

The one-day four-hour AARP Smart Driver class is being held at the Chestnuthill Park Building in Brodheadsville on Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m.

It is only open to those who provide evidence of taking a class during the past 36 months.

There is a fee, with a reduced rate for AARP members.

OTOH event

Operation Touch of Home is having a dinner and comedy show fundraiser on Saturday at the Polk Township Volunteer Fire Company: “There’s Something Funny Going on Here” with Paul Bond, Max Dolcelli and Scott Bruce.

One must be 21 or older to attend.

Attendees are asked to bring nonperishable items for the troops. For a list of approved items go to www.operationtouchofhome.org.

Fellowship breakfast

Effort UMC is hosting a fellowship breakfast from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Sunday. Members are asked to bring their family, friends and appetite for some fellowship and breakfast. This is a freewill donation breakfast that supports the capital improvements of the church.
