Veterans Day

Tamaqua American Legion Post 173 will host its annual Veterans Day Parade on Nov. 11. Staging will begin at 9 a.m. at the former Maff Motors building in the 900 block of East Broad Street.

The line of march will head west on Broad Street, dispersing in the area of Lehigh Street.

Leading the parade, behind the Tamaqua American Legion Color Guard, will be parade grand marshal.

Following the parade, a brief service will be held in front of the Legion post at 206 W. Broad St.

Parking will be banned along the parade route.

Parade organizers encourage everyone to be part of the event, either by walking, driving or riding in the parade. All veterans, their family members, individuals, businesses, civic groups, fire companies, youth groups, clubs, organizations, military vehicles and antique car enthusiasts are welcome. Simply show your support by taking part in the parade.

Andreas parade

The West Penn Township Lions and Lioness Clubs, along with the Andreas Sporting Club, will host the Andreas Halloween Parade at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, with the rain date set for Oct. 18.

Deadline to register for the parade is Friday. Only those preregistered are eligible for monetary prizes.

Parade formation begins at 6:15 p.m. at the Andreas Sporting Club. A representative from each entry must be present at the sporting club after the parade in order to receive any prize. All judges’ decisions are final.

Refreshments will be served after the parade, to participants only.

Trick or treat

Tamaqua Mayor Nathan Gerace has announced that Tamaqua’s trick or treat night will be held on Oct. 27. Hours will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Anyone wishing to have the ghouls and goblins entertain them should make sure their porch light is turned on.

Gerace says he selected the Saturday before Halloween after speaking with several teachers, parents and children. All preferred the weekend to a school night.

Motorists are reminded to drive extra carefully as the streets will be filled with youngsters.

Zion Lewistown

Pastor Jim Williams will host the 10:30 a.m. service this Rally Day Sunday at Zion Church, Lewistown Valley, featuring the musical group “Crossover.”

Sunday school will be held at 9:15 a.m. and a covered dish dinner will be held following the service.

St. John

The Rev. Phyllis Wolford will officiate at the 9:15 a.m. Sunday service in St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Also on Sunday, the bell choir will rehearse at 8 a.m., the adult class will meet after worship, Sunday school and Confirmation classes meet at 10:30 a.m.

Activities for next week include: Thursday, property committee meets at 7 p.m., angel choir meets at 6 p.m., shepherd choir rehearses at 6:30 p.m., chancel choir practices at 7:30 p.m.

St. Peter’s West Penn

The Rev. Virginia Heimer will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship service this Sunday at St. Peter’s West Penn Church, Mantzville. The service will include a Joyous Noise Offering. Sunday school classes meet at 10:15 a.m.

Also on Sunday, the junior choir will meet at 11 a.m. and Girl Scouts will meet at 6 p.m.

Next week’s activities include: Monday, play rehearsal at 6 p.m.; Tuesday, prayer group meets at 5 p.m., women’s group meets at 6:30 p.m.; Wednesday, Confirmation class meets at 5 p.m.; Thursday, apple dumpling pick up from noon to 5 p.m., cherub choir meets at 6:30 p.m., senior choir rehearsal at 7:30 p.m.

Calvary Lewistown

The Rev. Susan Moore will officiate at the 10:25 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Calvary Evangelical Methodist Church in the Lewistown Valley. Sunday school classes meet at 9:15 a.m.

Also on Sunday, a time of singing, praise and Bible study will be held at 6:30 p.m.

The next prayer meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Oct. 17.
