Honoring veterans

The Tamaqua Area Middle and Senior high schools will observe Veterans Day with a brief assembly at 7:25 a.m. on Nov. 9. Participants will meet at the flagpole in front of the senior high.

Any veteran from the Tamaqua area who would like to be recognized during the roll call of veterans should contact Tara Orefice, assistant high school principal, at 570-668-1901 before Nov. 5.

The public is welcome to attend the ceremony.

Trick or treat

Tamaqua Mayor Nathan Gerace has announced that Tamaqua’s trick or treat night will be held on Oct. 27. Hours will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Anyone wishing to have the ghouls and goblins entertain them should make sure their porch light is turned on.

Gerace says he selected the Saturday before Halloween after speaking with several teachers, parents and children. All preferred the weekend to a school night.

Motorists are reminded to drive extra carefully as the streets will be filled with youngsters. Rain date will be Oct. 31, same time.

Soup social

The next monthly community soup social at Trinity United Church of Christ will be held on Nov. 3. The event will be held from 4-6 p.m. in the social hall.

The meal is free to the public and everyone is welcome to enjoy the soup, desserts, refreshments and time with friends. For more information or to volunteer, stop by the church, 22 Lafayette St., or call 570-668-4139.

St. Peter’s West Penn

Guest worship leader Glenn Rarick will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship service this Reformation Sunday in St. Peter’s Church in West Penn. Sunday school classes meet at 10:15 a.m.

Also on Sunday, a harvest party, featuring a hayride and pumpkin painting, will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., Girl Scouts will meet at 6 p.m.

Next week’s activities include: Monday, play rehearsal at 6 p.m.; Tuesday, prayer group meets at 5 p.m.; Wednesday, Confirmation class meets at 5 p.m.; Thursday, cherub choir meets at 6:30 p.m., senior choir rehearses at 7:30 p.m.

St. Peter’s Dinner Theatre will present performances at 6 p.m. on Nov. 2 and Nov. 3, with a matinee at 1 p.m. on Nov. 4.

Calvary Lewistown

Pastor Susan Moore will officiate at the 10:25 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Calvary Evangelical Methodist Church in the Lewistown Valley. Sunday school classes meet at 9:15 a.m.

Also on Sunday, a time of singing, praise and Bible study will be held at 6:30 p.m.

The next prayer meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Oct. 31.

The youth group will provide pumpkins for a pumpkin carving night on Oct. 27. The festivities will begin at 6 p.m.

St. John Lutheran

The Rev. Phyllis Wolford will officiate at the 9:15 a.m. Sunday service in St. John’s Lutheran Church. The service will include Holy Communion.

Sunday school and Confirmation classes will meet at 10:30 a.m.

The choirs rehearse on Thursdays: angel choir at 6 p.m.; shepherd choir at 6:30 p.m.; and chancel choir at 7:30 p.m.

Zion Lewistown

Pastor Jim Williams will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. service this Sunday in Zion Church, Lewistown Valley. Sunday school classes will meet at 9:15 a.m.

Upcoming events include: Nov. 1, guild will meet at 6:30 p.m.; Nov. 8, OWLS meeting at noon, consistory meets at 6:30 p.m.
