Library news

The Tamaqua Public Library continues to provide a variety of services to local residents of all ages.

The fall story time sessions are currently underway on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for children up to the age of 5.

The young adult program meets the third Monday of each month. The next session will be at 6 p.m. on Nov. 19, when the discussion will center on the Walt Disney Company. In addition to hearing fun facts about Disney, there will be games and free pizza.

A spooktacular book sale is currently underway and will continue through Nov. 21 during regular library hours.

The Mauch Chunk Trust Company will sponsor a chicken or beef dinner platter sale to benefit the library. Sales are by advance tickets only with pick up between 4 and 6 p.m. on Nov. 15.

The library is located at 30 S. Railroad St. For more information on any library event, call 570-668-4660.

Regular library hours are: Monday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesday and Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Friday, noon to 5 p.m.; and Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Diaper depot

Families with infants and toddlers, living within the Tamaqua Area School District, are the focus of a new family ministry at Zion Lutheran Church.

Zion’s will be distributing free diapers on the third Saturday of each month, by appointment only. Proof of residency, but not financial status, photo identification and preregistration are required. Registrations are now being accepted for the Nov. 17 distribution date.

Each 50-pack bundle of diapers will also come with a pack of wipes. Participants will be provided one bundle of diapers per child, per month, subject to availability.

Honoring veterans

The Tamaqua Area Middle and Senior high schools will observe Veterans Day with a brief assembly at 7:25 a.m. on Nov. 9. Participants will meet at the flagpole in front of the senior high.

Any veteran from the Tamaqua area who would like to be recognized during the roll call of veterans should contact Tara Orefice, assistant high school principal, at 570-668-1901 before Nov. 5.

The public is welcome to attend the ceremony.

Soup social

The next monthly community soup social at Trinity United Church of Christ will be held this Saturday. The event will be held from 4-6 p.m. in the social hall.

The meal is free to the public and everyone is welcome to enjoy the soup, desserts, refreshments and time with friends. For more information or to volunteer, stop by the church, 22 Lafayette St., or call 570-668-4139.

Zion Lewistown

Pastor Jim Williams will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. service this Sunday in Zion Church, Lewistown Valley. The service will include Holy Communion. Sunday school classes will meet at 9:15 a.m.

Upcoming events include: Nov. 1, guild will meet at 6:30 p.m.; Nov. 8, OWLS meeting at noon, consistory meets at 6:30 p.m.; Nov. 13, fundraising committee meets at 6:30 p.m., preschool board meets at 7:30 p.m.

St. John Lutheran

The Rev. Phyllis Wolford will officiate at the 9:15 a.m. Sunday service in St. John’s Lutheran Church. The service will include Holy Communion and the observance of All Saint’s Sunday.

Sunday school and Confirmation classes will meet at 10:30 a.m.

The choirs rehearse on Thursdays: angel choir at 6 p.m.; shepherd choir at 6:30 p.m.; and chancel choir at 7:30 p.m.

The bell choir will rehearse at 8 a.m. on Nov. 11.

St. Peter’s West Penn

The Rev. Dr. Samuel Zeiser of the PANE Synod will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship service this Reformation Sunday in St. Peter’s Church in West Penn. The service will include Holy Communion. Sunday school classes meet at 10:15 a.m.

Also on Sunday, the junior choir will rehearse at 11 a.m., St. Peter’s Dinner Theatre will have a matinee performance at 1 p.m., Girl Scouts will meet at 6 p.m.

Next week’s activities include: Tuesday, prayer group meets at 5 p.m., worship and music committee meets at 6:30 p.m.; Wednesday, retirees meet at 10 a.m., Confirmation class meets at 5 p.m.
