Meet the Raiders

The Tamaqua Area School District’s annual winter “Meet the Raiders night” will be held on Nov. 28 in the Tamaqua Athletic Center. The event will begin at 7 p.m.

The public is welcome to attend this free event which will feature the girls and boys basketball teams, the wrestling team, swim team and cheerleaders. The Blue Raider Pep Band will also be in attendance.

Veterans parade

Tamaqua American Legion Post 173 will host its annual Veterans Day Parade this Saturday. Staging will begin at 9 a.m. at the former Maff Motors building in the 900 block of East Broad Street. This year’s grand marshal is Frank Walton.

Following the parade, a brief service will be held in front of the Legion post at 206 W. Broad St.

Library news

The Tamaqua Public Library continues to provide a variety of services to local residents of all ages.

The young adult program meets the third Monday of each month. The next session will be at 6 p.m. on Nov. 19, when the discussion will center on the Walt Disney Company. In addition to hearing fun facts about Disney, there will be games and free pizza.

A spooktacular book sale is currently underway and will continue through Nov. 21 during regular library hours.

The Mauch Chunk Trust Company will sponsor a chicken or beef dinner platter sale to benefit the library. Sales are by advance tickets only with pickup between 4 and 6 p.m. on Nov. 15.

Regular library hours are: Monday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesday and Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Friday, noon to 5 p.m.; and Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

St. John Lutheran

The Rev. Phyllis Wolford will officiate at the 9:15 a.m. Sunday service in St. John’s Lutheran Church. The service will include a tribute to veterans.

Also on Sunday, the bell choir will rehearse at 8 a.m., Sunday school and Confirmation classes will meet at 10:30 a.m.

Activities for next week include: Monday, church council meets at 7 p.m.; Thursday, property committee meets at 7 p.m., angel choir rehearses at 6 p.m., shepherd choir meets at 6:30 p.m. and chancel choir practice is at 7:30 p.m.

St. Peter’s West Penn

The Rev. Kenneth T. Melber Jr. will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship service this Veterans Recognition Sunday in St. Peter’s Church in West Penn. Sunday school classes meet at 10:15 a.m.

Also on Sunday, the junior choir will rehearse at 11 a.m., the preschool basket raffle will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Girl Scouts will meet at 6 p.m.

Next week’s activities include: Tuesday, newsletter deadline, prayer group meets at 5 p.m.; Wednesday, Confirmation class meets at 5 p.m.; Thursday, apple dumpling pickup from noon to 5 p.m., cherub choir practices at 6:30 p.m., senior choir rehearses at 7:30 p.m.

Calvary Lewistown

The Rev. Susan Moore will officiate at the 10:25 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Calvary Evangelical Methodist Church in the Lewistown Valley. The service will include a salute to veterans, Holy Communion and special music.

Also on Sunday, Sunday school classes meet at 9:15 a.m., and an evening service and Bible study session will be held at 6:30 p.m.

A prayer meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Nov. 14.

The annual Harvest and Thanksgiving service will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 18.
