Mahoning Valley tree lights up Harrisburg

Published December 01. 2018 07:55AM

Last Monday, a 20-foot tall Douglas Fir left its field in Mahoning Valley for its splendid new home inside the Rotunda in Harrisburg.

“It’s a huge honor to supply our State Capitol with this tree. There’s not that many growers that have trees that big. Think of all the people in the Rotunda that will walk by it and see it,” said Chris Botek, owner of Crystal Spring Tree Farm.

It’s an accolade he has had for 24 out of the last 25 years. He does not recall why there was one year he could not do it, and another grower supplied the tree.

There used to be a process where he and other growers would bid on this job. He would consistently win the bid. Now, they simply call him or a few other growers to see if they can fulfill the tree request that year.

“This tree is very tall, so it’s very heavy,” he said.

In addition to this one, he also sends smaller trees that will go on the steps outside, in the Soldier’s Grove, other places outside and in some offices.

These trees are undoubtedly a part of history. But every tree is special for one reason.

“Every tree is important. Every family is going to celebrate Christmas morning by that tree,” said Botek. “We work all year for this. It is extremely rewarding.”

Crystal Spring Tree Farm, a family business, was started in 1964 on 25 acres. Now it has about 200 acres of trees.

“We have such a phenomenal supply of cut-your-own trees here. We hear people say, ‘It’s not hard to find a tree, it’s hard to make a decision,’” he said.

He also sells decorated and undecorated wreaths, fresh pine garlands, grave covers and various items in the gift shop.

“We try to cater to everyone. We have a great relationship with our customers,” he said.
