Schuylkill driver facing DUI count

A Schuylkill County driver is facing charges including driving under the influence following a crash that occurred at 1:55 a.m. on Saturday.

State police at Schuylkill Haven said Richard Watson, 37, of South Manheim Township, was driving a 2017 Ford Focus northbound on Route 183 in Pine Grove Township, and approaching the intersection with Route 443.

Troopers said he attempted to make a right turn onto Route 443 East. While turning, Watson traveled straight across the traffic island striking the traffic light pole with its front end causing major damage. He continued across the roadway entering a parking lot and striking a commercial property at 101 Route 183. This is where the Ford came to rest.

Troopers said Watson was placed under arrest for suspicion of DUI. Charges will be filed, troopers added. The intersection was closed for several hours until stop signs and early warning signs could be posted.
