A look back: Jan. 26, 1976

Published January 26. 2019 06:30AM

Fourteen cars of a 110-car Lehigh Valley Railroad freight train en route from Sayre to Allentown derailed early Sunday morning at the Route 248 cloverleaf underpass.

The derailment occurred when the 47th car in the freight left the tracks and 14 others followed. It took place on the former Central Railroad of New Jersey tracks, which are on the east side of the Lehigh River.

The derailment was the second one within a month on the LVRR. On Dec. 1, 16 cars of a 60-car freight derailed at the Lehigh Gorge, midway between Jim Thorpe and White Haven.

It was also the fifth derailment on the line between Wilkes-Barre and Palmerton since 1974.
