Citizen of the year
The Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce is now accepting nominations for the The deadline for nominations for the Joseph M. Plasko Citizenship and the Business of the Year Awards.
The citizenship award is open to all residents of the Tamaqua Area School District, 18 years of age or older.
Nomination forms are available at the chamber office, 37 W. Broad St., Tamaqua, or at the chamber’s website, www.tamaqua.net.
Deadline for nominations will be noon on March 1.

Mayor’s events
Tamaqua Mayor Nathan Gerace has two upcoming events scheduled for February — the first meeting of the new group “THRIVE” and Coffee with a Cop.”
THRIVE stands for Tamaqua Has Residents Invested In a Vibrant Environment. The initial meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 12 at Tamaqua Borough Hall, 320 E. Broad St.
The second in a series of “Coffee With a Cop” events will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on Feb. 23 at the Hope and Coffee shop, 137 Pine St., Tamaqua.
Everyone is welcome to attend, and Gerace encourages all to bring a friend to both events.
Girls softball
The West Penn Girls Softball League will hold a fun skills night on Jan. 31 at the West Penn Elementary School.
Open to girls between the ages of 5 and 16, the evening is an opportunity to gain softball skills while having fun through friendly competition.
There is no fee.
Participants should wear sneakers and bring water and a glove. Personal bats are allowed, but there will be several available.
Registration forms and information for the 2019 season will be available.

STS free rides
The Schuylkill Transportation System is offering Free Fare Fridays on Feb. 8 and March 8. While registered senior citizens always ride free, fare paying passengers will be able to catch a free ride on any fixed route bus on those days.

St. John Lutheran
The Rev. Phyllis Wolford will officiate at the 9:15 a.m. Sunday service in St. John’s Lutheran Church. The service will include Holy Communion.
Sunday school and Confirmation classes will meet at 10:30 a.m.
The worship and music committee will meet at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
The choirs will rehearse next Thursday — angel choir at 6 p.m., shepherd choir at 6:30 p.m. and chancel choir at 7:30 p.m.
The bell choir will rehearse at 8 a.m. on Feb. 10.
Zion Lewistown
Pastor Jim Williams will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. service this Souper Bowl Sunday in Zion Church, Lewistown Valley. The service will include a collection of canned goods for the Salvation Army.
Sunday school classes will meet at 9:15 a.m.
Calvary Lewistown
The Rev. Susan Moore will officiate at the 10:25 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Calvary Evangelical Methodist Church in the Lewistown Valley. Canned/packaged soups will be collected for Souper Bowl Sunday.
Also on Sunday, a big game party and time of fellowship will be held at 5:30 p.m. Call 570-668-3359 for more information as this event is being held at a private home.
A prayer meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Feb. 6.
