A look back: Feb. 20, 1988
The 107-year-old Mauch Chunk Opera House located along Broadway in Jim Thorpe is being completely restored, thanks, in part, to a $26,000 legislative grant that was obtained for the Opera House Committee by state Sen. James Rhoades. Patricia Handwerk, a member of the committee, said the grant will be used to do renovation work to the walls of the facility.
Jim Smith, building manager, said an addition was added to the stage.
Other work to be completed includes a new control center for lights and sound, renovations to the electrical system; converting the dressing rooms into a compatible setting, and complete renovations to the balcony.
