A look back: March 11, 1992

The Nesquehoning sewage treatment plant went into operation yesterday at 2 p.m., completing a project started by the borough three years ago after more than 20 years of insistence by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources to build the system because raw sewage was continuing to be dumped into the Nesquehoning Creek.

Attending the session when the plant went online for the first time were council members Frank Jacobs, Audrey Gogal, Steve Yurchak and Jack Coniglio, as well as Mayor Isabel Wasas Zickler and project engineer Bob Watral of the PennEast Corporation. He said the project officially started in December 1989, and the design phase took about a year and the construction about one year more.
