A look back: March 12, 1965
Proposed construction of a multipurpose dam on the Mauch Chunk Creek Watershed is almost a certainty as the result of an announcement of a substantial financial boost.
Dr. Maurice K. Goddard, secretary of the state Department of Forests and Waters, disclosed last night at a meeting of the Carbon County’s five granges in the Normal Square Chapel in Mahoning Valley that his department has appropriated $100,000 toward the construction of the $1.15 million project.
He said the Carbon County Recreation Authority will also be provided Project 70 funds to purchase an additional 860 acres of land for recreational and conservation purposes. Project 70, he said, is not designed to cut up agricultural land, but to help the state’s economy.
