A look back: April 10, 1972

Published April 10. 2019 12:35PM

After over 20 years of operation, SS. Peter and Paul’s Parochial School, Tamaqua, will close its doors for good following the conclusion of the current term.

The formal announcement of the closing was made in the church bulletin distributed at Masses yesterday in the church.

Two prime reasons for the closing, reportedly, are a shortage of nuns and the decrease in pupil enrollment. A total of 82 children attend classes in the school.

Sister Mary James is the school principal and teaches grades 5-6. Other nuns on the staff are Sister M. Elizabeth, grades 7-8; Sister M. David, grades 3-4; and Sister M. Michaelene, grades 1-2.
