May art exhibit
The May art exhibit at the Tamaqua Community Arts Center will feature the work of Maria Stabio, a native of San Francisco who now resides in Grier City.
The exhibit will open with an artist meet and greet from 6 to 8 p.m. on May 8. There will be light refreshments and the public is welcome to attend.
The art center is located at 125 Pine St., Tamaqua.
Empty bowl dinner
The fourth Empty Bowl Dinner, sponsored by the Tamaqua Area Faith Fellowship Network, will be held on May 15 in Founder’s Hall at Trinity United Church of Christ.
Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. for a time of fellowship and light snacks. Handmade bowls, which will be available at a raffle, will be on display and a video presentation will be made wrapping up Hunger weekend events, which will include a Hunger Walk.
Diners will be able to sample any or all of the soups available.
Advance tickets are available from any TAFFN member and at the Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce. No tickets will be sold at the door.
Trinity UCC is located at 22 Lafayette St.
Library book club
The Tamaqua Public Library’s Book Club selection for April is “The Lady in Gold,” the true story about a celebrated work of art stolen during the Nazi reign over Germany and Austria. Written by Anne Marie O’Connor, a contributor to The Washington Post, the story focuses on the portrait of Adele Bloch-Blauer. Painted by Gustav Klindt in 1907, the portrait was the focus of a decadeslong battle for custody between Bloch-Bauer’s heirs and the Austrian government.
The U.S. Supreme Court became involved in the dispute and the resolution had wide-ranging effects in the art world.
The book club will meet at 6 p.m. April 22 at the library, 30 S. Railroad St.
Tamaqua seniors
The Tamaqua Senior Citizens met April 11 at the Tamaqua YMCA with 52 members in attendance. President Melody Weicker opened the meeting with the reading of “Morning Prayer.”
Membership dues for 2019 are now being accepted.
The group is open to anyone 55 or older, meeting at 1 p.m. every Thursday at the YMCA. The next meeting will be held on April 25 as there is no meeting scheduled for Holy Thursday.
Brownie Troop news
Brownie Troop 33013 is currently working on two projects — the continuation of the community garden and the creation/installation of a “little free library.”
The troop is currently collecting book donations, any and all genres, for the “library.”
Spring planting day is scheduled for 10 a.m. on April 27, at the community garden, which is located at the corner of Lehigh Street and Cottage Avenue.

Primitive Methodist
Pastor Rick Clemson will officiate at the 10:45 a.m. worship service this Easter Sunday in American Primitive Methodist Church.
Sunday school classes are held at 9:30 a.m.
There will be a 7 p.m. service, with communion, on Holy Thursday, April 18.
Hope in the Mountains NFG are held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays. This is a Narcotics Anonymous group for families. For more information, call Mark at 570-952-5098.
Bethany EC
The Rev. Kevin Roberts will officiate at the 8, 9:30 and 11 a.m. worship services this Easter Sunday in Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church. This is a change in the regular Sunday service schedule.
Sunday school classes meet at 9:15 a.m.
Activities for the next week include: Monday, Celebrate Recovery women’s training at 5 p.m., Celebrate Recovery meets at 6:30 p.m.; Wednesday, TYM Remix meets at 6:30 p.m., GriefShare meets at 7 p.m., worship practice is at 8 p.m.; Thursday, young men’s study group meets at 6 p.m., coffee and conversation at 7 p.m. at 137 Pine St.; Friday, TYM REMIX FOGON at 6 p.m.
