Nesquehoning Borough Council voted on or discussed the following items during its monthly meeting last week:

• Adopted the 2018 property maintenance code.

• Approved officers Tim Wuttke and Richard Neikam for a mandatory class at the University of Scranton as a requirement to continue using the JNET service.

• Approved increasing the crossing guard salary by $1 beginning in the 2019-20 school year. The borough will chip in 50 cents while Panther Valley School District will chip in 50 cents. Council said the crossing guards have not had a raise in a few years and deserve it.

• The next Nesquehoning Neighborhood Watch meeting will take place at 7 p.m. on May 6 at the borough hall.

• For the month of March, Nesquehoning police collected $3,803.17; issued 71 citations; responded to 465 incidents and drove 4,980 while on patrol.

• Approved advertising for a full-time police officer. A vacancy was created two weeks ago with the resignation of officer Derek Marouchoc.

• John McArdle, borough emergency management coordinator, announced that the fire department is moving forward with replacing at least one of the dry hydrants at the pond in the Hauto Valley Estates portion of the borough. He is hoping to have it installed by June. Another dry hydrant at the pond may also be replaced pending discussion with Reading and Northern Railroad, which removed a railroad crossing that was accessed by fire to the second dry hydrant at the pond.

• Eastern Environmental began work at the sewer plant on unit 2. The company was hired to complete the renovation of the unit last year, but problems with the work being done forced the borough to halt the project until April. The unit, which was painted by a subcontractor, must also be repainted because the job was completed to specs the first time.

• The borough will hold an electronics recycling event from 2-5 p.m. on May 21 at 50 E. Locust St., where the recycling bins used to be.
