Election certification pending
Carbon County’s election votes need a little extra time before they can be certified because of thousands of write-ins that were cast in the primaries.
On Thursday, Commissioner William O’Gurek, who sits on the county election board because he is not seeking re-election, said that the election will be certified during the board’s June 10 meeting.
The office staff will need a good part of a week to process the write-in votes, O’Gurek said.
O’Gurek pointed out that there have been questions regarding the write-ins and explained that on the municipal level, you need 10 write-in votes to get on the ballot.
In another election matter, O’Gurek said that since Election Day, the Carbon County Election Bureau has received 563 applications either for new voters or changing your party, which is not typical following elections.
These applications cannot be processed until the certification of the vote, and O’Gurek asks the applicants to be patient.
“After June 10, we will start to process the hundreds of changes or new registrations,” he said.
