Students receive quilts in honor of retiring teacher
It was a colorful day at the Lehighton Elementary Center, when 20 kindergarten students each received a crayon quilt. As the students celebrated the end of their first year with an alphabet countdown, letter “Q” day turned out to be extra special. Gloria Eckhart visited her daughter, Kocher’s classroom to teach them the steps in making a quilt. She explained that a quilt is like a sandwich with a top layer, a middle layer and a bottom layer all held together with intricate stitches. Eckhart demonstrated using shapes, such as diamonds, to construct a star in a quilt she is currently working on. Eckhart started working on the 20 crayon quilts in August 2018 as a memorable gift to be given to Mrs. Kocher’s last students before retiring at the end of the current school year.
