Local inmates on death row
Pennsylvania has a total of 140 inmates, all male, on death row as of July 1.
Local death row inmates, all who are incarcerated at SCI-Greene, include:
Junius Burno: Sentenced in Lehigh County on March 6, 2007. The former Lansford man was sentenced to death in the April 2003 shooting deaths of a local disc jockey and a friend in a botched robbery attempt in Allentown. Burno contended that he was outside the apartment when local DJ Carlos Juarbe and Oscar Rosado were killed. Burno was found guilty of two counts of first degree murder and given the death penalty. Burno has two death sentences.
Eric Matthew Frein: Sentenced in Pike County on May 5, 2017. A jury sentenced him to die for shooting two Pennsylvania troopers at their barracks in a late-night ambush, killing one and leaving a second with devastating injuries. Frein led police on a 48-day manhunt in the Poconos before U.S. marshals caught him at an abandoned airplane hangar. He was convicted on charges including murder of a law enforcement officer and terrorism.
Charles Ray Hicks: Sentenced in Monroe County on Jan. 6, 2015. on Convicted in the murder and dismemberment of a woman whose remains were found along a pair of eastern Pennsylvania interstates in 2008. Hicks was convicted of first-degree murder in Monroe County in the January 2008 murder of 36-year-old Deanna Null, whose remains were found in trash bags scattered along Interstates 80 and 380 near Stroudsburg. Police said her severed hands were found hidden in the walls of Hicks’ home.
Michael John Parrish: Sentenced in Monroe County on May 15, 2012. The Effort man was found guilty on two counts of first-degree murder in the shooting deaths of his girlfriend Victoria M. Adams, 21, and their toddler son Sidney Michael Parrish in their apartment on July 6, 2009. Parrish has two death sentences.
Mark Newton Spotz: Sentenced in Schuylkill County on March 6, 1996. Spotz killed four people in a four-day murder spree in January 1995, including June Ohlinger, 52, of Schuylkill County and stole her car. Spotz has three death sentences.
Sentences reduced
Ronald Champney and Daniel Saranchak, convicted in Schuylkill County, and Manuel M. Sepulveda, convicted in Monroe County, were previously on death row but have since had their sentences reduced. All three are still incarcerated at SCI-Greene
