Schuylkill opens bids for roof on courthouse

Published July 25. 2019 01:18PM

A new roof for Schuylkill County’s historic courthouse, as expected, will come with a weighty price tag.

The commissioners haven’t nailed down which of four companies will be awarded the bid.

Bids were opened before the Commissioners’ weekly meeting Wednesday.

The lowest bidder is J.M. Young & Sons Inc. of Belleville, at $866,000.

The other bidders are C&D Waterproofing Corp. of Bloomsburg, at $1,094,000; Detwiler Roofing of McVeytown, at $1,108,000; and Spotts Brothers Inc. of Schuylkill Haven, at $1,449.000.

In April, Spotts Brothers was awarded a $98,000 contract to reroof the county archives building and public entrance of the county courthouse.

The commissioners said that the bids would be reviewed by county engineering before a contract would be awarded, with a tentative date of Aug. 7.

The project includes replacement of the courthouse’s slate roof, as well as recovering a section which is flat, topped with a rubber roof. The main courthouse structure, which measures 100 by 195 feet, was built in 1891.

At a previous meeting, County Administrator Gary Bender said some leaks are occurring where nails used to hold the slate have failed.

In other action, the commissioners:

• Approved a $517,703 contract with Lobar Site Development for repairs of county bridge 140, Weishample Road over Deep Creek, Barry Township. The funds will come from liquid fuels monies.

• Approved a three-year print agreement between the county and LexisNexis, from November 2019 through October 2022, for materials under a service subscription for the courthouse’s law library. The initial amount for one year is $22,816, with yearly increases limited to 3 percent.

• Approved a contract with ProDesign Plus for CDBG consulting services for CDBG years 2019, 2020 and 2021, effective April 2019.
