A look back: Aug. 3, 1967
The annual cleaning of chimneys in Lehighton homes by the Lehighton Fire Department began today. Chimneys are cleaned each year by volunteer firemen of Lehigh Fire Company No. 1 and Engine Company No. 2.
Chimney fires in Lehighton, as a result of these efforts, have been reduced to a minimum. Last year, a total of 173 chimneys were cleaned by the firemen.
In addition to cleaning the chimneys, the firemen inspect them for deficiencies and make recommendations to the property owners for repairs.
There is no charge for the cleaning but the firemen do accept donations if owners are so inclined to offer them.
