A look back: Aug. 6, 1983

St. Jerome Church in Tamaqua was the successful bidder today for the purchase of the North Ward School, Tamaqua, offering $51,000 for the property.

Real estate agent Joe Lopez represented the church and its pastor, the Rev. Robert Fagan, during the proceeding in which auctioneer Curt Houser presided. The process also saw Ron Regar, representing Turkey Hill Mini Marts, and real estate agent Gene Durigan of Lehighton, representing a private bidder, participate in the bidding before Lopez offered the highest bid for the property.

The church plans to demolish the building and use the lot for a playground for St. Jerome’s Elementary School and a parking lot for those attending Mass and services at the church.
