West End news for Aug. 21, 2019
Senior Citizen Day
According to the Monroe County Seniors newsletter, today is National Senior Citizen Day.
For those who attend the Chestnuthill Senior Center and the other county Senior centers, it is an opportunity to go to the West End Fair as a group and celebrate all that the fair is offering, including meeting friends from other areas of the county and having some taste treats as well as visual delights.
Blood drive today
A Miller-Keystone blood drive will be held at the Western Pocono Community Library today, beginning at noon.
On Sept. 5, the Kunkletown Fire House will be the host site for an American Red Cross blood drive from 1 to 6 p.m. Both blood and Power Red will be accepted.
Community dinner
Zion Lutheran in Brodheadsville is again hosting a free community dinner from 5 to 6:30 p.m. today.
Eldred meeting
The Board of Supervisors is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. today at the municipal building on Kunkletown Road. To verify, especially in light of West End Fair week, call the township at 610-381-4252.
Pleasant Valley
School may not be starting in full for students at Pleasant Valley until Monday, but in the meantime there are various activities tomorrow, involving kindergartners, first and second grade this Thursday.
Be on the lookout for the yellow buses as kindergartners are to go on an orientation ride on Thursday morning in two groups. The elementary students will be in school in the afternoon to find their respective classrooms and the Pleasant Valley Intermediate students have a 9 a.m. allotted time to find their classrooms.
Mission meal
The West End Mission will present its free mission meal from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church in Gilbert.
Special program
The Chestnuthill Senior Center will host a special program from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday.
Jennifer Pandolfo from the Center for Vision Loss will present a program: Seniors and Vision Health, giving the attendees a chance to hear about a comprehensive look at eye health for seniors.
The choice of menu for that day is veggie wrap, chickpea and bean salad, diced pears and whole wheat roll for the light meal and tuna noodle casserole, Brussels sprouts, California blend vegetables and an orange for the regular meal. Menu choice must be given to the site manager by 11 a.m. the day before at 570-242-6770.
Pantry open
Effort UMC’s food pantry will be open from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Courtyard garden
The Pleasant Valley High School Courtyard garden, only a dream when the school opened in the fall of 1960, has recently been cleaned and beautified by a dedicated group of Pleasant Valley retirees and friends.
And the beautiful fountain now operates.
Past and present PVH’ers extend their thanks to those volunteers.
Weekend duty
Touch of Home officers and volunteers will be at the Air Show at Pocono Raceway on Saturday and Sunday. The hours are from noon to 4 p.m. The gates open at 10 a.m.
Hoagie sale
The Southern Pocono Cluster of Methodist churches, which includes Effort UMC, is holding a hoagie sale until Sunday. All payment must be received no later than Sunday.
Pickup date is Sept. 4 after 5:30 p.m. The hoagies are made fresh that afternoon.

One service
Salem-St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Kresgeville, will have one service on Sunday. It will be a praise service at 9:30 a.m.
Church picnic
The Effort UMC family will hold its annual church family picnic Sunday, beginning at 12:30 p.m.
Sunday supper
Our Lady Queen of Peace Church is hosting a free Sunday supper from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday.
Free concert
This Sunday, the free summer concert series continues at the Chestnuthill Township Park in Brodheadsville with the Bandana Brothers at 6 p.m.
The four-piece band consists of rhythm guitar, lead and bass guitars, percussions with influences from an abundance of genres such as folk, jazz, classic rock and popular tunes. They will be playing originals and covers by artists such as Bob Dylan, Grateful Dead, Old Crow, Maroon 5, Allman Brothers, Neil Young, Doobie Brothers and more.
There will be free ice cream for everyone.

Polk meeting
The Polk Township Board of supervisors meeting is being held a week later, due to the West End Fair. That monthly meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Monday of the coming week.
Knit & Crochet
Zion’s group of knitters and crocheters will meet again at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the church complex in Brodheadsville.
Newcomers are welcome.
Republicans
The next regular meeting of the West End Republicans is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday at Cherry’s Family Restaurant in Kresgeville.
For those wishing to eat dinner there, the time is 6 p.m.

Membership info
As shared by American Legion Post 927 on its website, the Legion Act is now law.
That allows: any honorably discharged veteran to join the American Legion, with no more specific periods of service limitations.
This will also affect eligibility standards for both S.A.L. and the Ladies Auxiliary and forms will be corrected.
Flea market ahead
The American Legion Auxiliary Post 927 in Gilbert will hold a flea market from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 27, rain or shine, at 646 Fairgrounds Road.
Contact Pat at 570-629-3028. There will be a bake sale; lunch and water will be available.
Space can be rented as well as tables. Reservation and pre-pay is required no later than Sept. 1.
Deadline near
The PVEN is holding a celebration in recognition of the one-year anniversary of being in the new facility. It will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 25, at Mountain Springs Lake Resort in Reeders.

A keynote speaker will share about the difference PVEN has made in her life.
Teen Challenge visit
St. Peter’s United Methodist Church is hosting Teen Challenge on Sept. 15 to hear the testimonies and music of Teen Challenge at the 10 a.m. service.
Overcomers of all ages will provide special musical selections throughout the worship hour, affirming God’s spirit in helping to overcome addictions.
The group comes from the Rehrersburg area to share life transformation stories.
Everyone coming for the service is invited to stay for the coffee hour fellowship after the service.
