Nesquehoning signs $1.9M trash deal
Five years worth of trash in Nesquehoning will cost just over $1.9 million.
On Wednesday, borough council voted to award the five-year contract for trash hauling to current provider, Tamaqua Transfer, at a total cost of $1,936,927.
The contract goes into effect on Oct. 1.
Council President David Hawk said that one item under the new contract is creating a schedule for pickup that doesn’t fluctuate as much as it has in the current contract.
“We have had discussions with the contractor for having a more set schedule than in the past where sometimes your pickup was 6 in the morning and sometimes 3 in the afternoon,” he said, noting that the borough has a bear problem and residents then wait to put out their trash until that morning in hopes that the animals won’t get to the trash before it is picked up. Because of this and the fluctuating trash pickup times that have been occurring, sometimes a person’s trash is missed by the trash collector because they already collected on that street.
Terms of the contract remain similar to what residents are used to with one big item pickup day in the month, as well as the types of trash that will be accepted weekly.
Letters will go out to residents regarding trash and recycling pickups at a later time.
