A Lehighton man was killed early Sunday morning when a vehicle he was riding in crashed along Maury Road in Penn Forest Township.

Lehighton State Police said Damian Mele, 20, died as a result of the injuries he sustained in the crash, which occurred at 1:30 a.m.

Troopers said Mele was in a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee operated by Frank Bokan III, 20, of Lehighton, who was traveling south on Maury Road when Bokan failed to negotiate a right curve and left the roadway. The vehicle traveled along a dirt embankment and overturned.

Mele was pronounced dead at the scene, while another passenger, Nicholas Skrimcosky, 20, of Lehighton, sustained minor injury. Bokan was uninjured.

Carbon County Coroner Robert Miller said Mele’s cause of death was multiple blunt force injuries as the result of being ejected from the vehicle.

Miller said Mele was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the incident.

The vehicle sustained severe damage.

Maury Road was closed for six hours.

I saw this kid play basketball he was really good. And, from what I hear a really nice Kid too. I do hope his family can make it through this and that Mister bokan can sleep at night
Damian was quiet, yet when you spoke to him, he was so caring and genuine, two qualities that are hard to find in people nowadays. He was the friend that you could go to for anything and not be judged. He made you laugh when you were upset. All around , Damian was just a fantastic human being, and he will be missed.
