Parishioners of the 19 churches in the Lehighton-Weissport area are doing their part in alleviating the current coin shortage.

Members of the churches literally broke open piggy banks and gathered all the change they could find as part of the “help the coin” shortage campaign launched by the Hazleton National Bank, with branched in Lehighton and Weissport.

According to the campaign, each church received currency for the amount turned in, plus 5 percent of the shortage.

Bank officials disclosed yesterday the 19 churches in the area turned in a total of $28,870 in coins. The churched in return received $1,443.50 extra for their fine efforts.
