2019 general election: Challenges for council seats and supervisors’ posts exist in Palmerton area

Published October 29. 2019 12:27PM

Supervisors’ races in Towamensing and Lower Towamensing townships and borough council contests in Palmerton and Bowmanstown will be the contested municipal races in lower Carbon County when the general election of 2019 takes place on Nov. 5.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. in each of the 51 election precincts in the county.

Towamensing Township

The voters in Towamensing are expected to elect two supervisors — one for a six-year term and one for a two-year term — this time around.

For the six-year term, the candidates are Democrat Michael S. George and Republican Scott H. Mosier.

Mosier is also a candidate for the two-year term and faces head-to-head competition from Democrat William Acierno.

There is one other candidate on Towamensing’s ballot. Republican Tanya Frey is running unopposed for the six-year term on the township’s board of auditors.

Bowmanstown Borough

Four candidates are seeking three four-year terms on the Bowmanstown Borough Council.

They include Democrat Kara Scott and Republicans Pamela J. Leiby, William Ravert and Norman A. Engle Jr.

The voters in Bowmanstown will also elect someone to serve as mayor for two years and another person to sit on the council for two years. There are no contests in those two races as Republican Zachary Snyder is unchallenged for the mayor’s post and Ravert is unopposed for the two-year council seat.

Palmerton Borough

There are six candidates for three four-year terms available on the Palmerton Borough Council.

They include Democrats Holly F. Hausman Sell, Randolph Gursky and Donald F. Heiney and Republicans Terry L. Costenbader, Andrew J. Hollywood and Joseph Slovick.

Palmerton voters will also fill a two-year term on the council. There is only one candidate for the position, that being Republican Michael J. Ballard.

Lower Towamensing Township

Two supervisors will be elected in Lower Towamensing Township this year, one for a six-year term and the other for a two-year term. There is no contest for the six-year term, but there is a race for the two-year seat.

Connie D. Brown won both Democratic and Republican nominations in May for the six-year term and will appear on both ballots for that position.

The race for the two-year term is between Democrat Tina Henninger and Republican Jay Mullikin. They were likewise put on the ballot by their respective parties after the death of Bernard Jesse Mendes. The winner will fill out the remainder of his term.

The Lower Towamensing voters are also slated to elect a person to serve a six-year term on the board of auditors, but there are no candidates for the position.
