A fire that gutted a bi-level, wood-frame house in Lake Hauto, Rush Township, and killed two pets on Wednesday morning have been ruled accidental, caused by a malfunctioning water heater located in the basement area.

State police fire marshal Joseph W. Hall released his findings of his investigation. The fire was first reported at 8:48 a.m. at 30 Crescent Drive. Hometown Fire Company volunteers were assisted by several surrounding fire companies in battling the blaze.

The property owner was identified as Salena Herbinko, 44, of Mechanicsburg. No damage estimate was given.
