Hibernians fill up holiday food baskets
In keeping with their motto of “Friendship, Unity and Christian Charity,” members of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Carbon County Division No. 1, Alec Campbell Mauch Chunk Division, met together on the deck of the Molly Maguires Pub & Steakhouse in downtown Jim Thorpe and prepared Thanksgiving Day dinner bags to be delivered to eight churches in Carbon County.
Along with a Thanksgiving Day greeting card from the members of the AOH, these dinner bags contained all the trimmings for a hearty holiday meal for a needy family. Each of them contained a whole turkey, instant potatoes, gravy, canned vegetables, fresh dinner rolls and cake mix.
The parishes receiving the Thanksgiving Day dinner bags were: Immaculate Conception in Jim Thorpe; St. Peter the Fisherman in Lake Harmony; SS. Peter and Paul in Lehighton; St. Joseph in Jim Thorpe; St. Mary’s Byzantine Church in Nesquehoning; St. John the Baptist Byzantine Church in Lansford; St. Joseph in Summit Hill; and Sacred Heart in Palmerton.
It will be the decision of the pastor of each parish to decide which family will receive the Thanksgiving Day dinner bag.
In addition to gathering and paying for the food and making up the bags, the members also personally delivered the food baskets to each parish.
AOH members participating in this event were Don Riley, Ronald Sheehan, Dan Evans, John Barry and Joe Seaver.
