Early dismissal

Pleasant Valley School District schools will have early dismissals today and the district will be on Thanksgiving recess until Dec. 3.

The PVI PTO Holiday Shop will be open then through Dec. 6.

PVE is slated to have its tree lighting celebration from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and begin its PTO Holiday Shop Wednesday. It will be held through Dec. 6.

Offices closed

The Chestnuthill Township office will be closed Thursday and Friday and the CJERP meeting is canceled due to the Thanksgiving holiday.

Polk Township office will be closed Thanksgiving Day, but will reopen Friday for normal business hours.

Various church offices will also be closed Thanksgiving Day.

Thanksgiving Mass

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Gilbert, will have a Thanksgiving Mass at 9 a.m. Thanksgiving Day.

The church office, however, will be closed both Thursday and Friday.

Thanksgiving dinner

The West End Home Association is hosting an open free community Thanksgiving dinner from noon to 4 p.m. Thursday in the main hall in Gilbert.

Chestnuthill Seniors

Due to the Thanksgiving holiday, the Chestnuthill Senior Center in Brodheadsville will be closed on Friday, a usual gathering day.

The center, at the Zion Lutheran Church complex in Brodheadsville, will be open again Dec. 4, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The activity that day will be arts and crafts.

The light menu is Italian wrap, low salt chips, sliced peaches, jello/yogurt.

The regular menu is lasagna roll-up, collard greens, carrots/diced pears.

Attendees are reminded to call the day before by 11 a.m. to verify their choice at 570-420-3735 or 570-242-6770.

Trivia Night

American Legion Post 927, Gilbert, will host its Trivia Night Friday, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Food and drink will be available.

Church decoration

Salem UCC, Gilbert, will decorate the sanctuary for the upcoming season on Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m.

On Sunday there will be a Cookie Walk after the 10 a.m. worship service.

Saturday service

Zion Lutheran, Brodheadsville, offers a worship service at 5 p.m. every Saturday. The Sunday services are at 8 a.m. and 10:45 a.m.

Advent begins

Sunday will be the First Sunday of Advent. St. Matthew’s UCC, Kunkletown, is celebrating the season by decorating the church in purple and invites people to come to the Sunday 9 a.m. worship service to find out why.

A congregational meeting will immediately follow the service. In case of inclement weather, the meeting will be held the following Sunday.

On the agenda: the selection of five new church council members and the 2020 budget to be voted upon.

Orders for poinsettias to decorate the church for Christmas are due by Dec. 15.

Hoagies orders are due by Dec. 6. Contact the church office for an order form.

Special speaker

St. Peter’s UMC, Saylorsburg, will focus on hope this First Sunday of Advent. The church will also celebrate the United Methodist Student Sunday.

Erica Foley, a sophomore at Penn State Berks, will bring her message of Hope to the sanctuary of St. Peter’s United Methodist Church during the 10 a.m. worship hour.

Salem-St. Paul’s, Kresgeville, will celebrate Holy Communion this Sunday.

Supervisors meet

The Chestnuthill Township Board of Supervisors is slated to meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the township municipal building in Brodheadsville.

Decorating ahead

Effort UMC church membership will be decorating the church on Saturday.

Member and friends are reminded that poinsettia orders and payment for white plants are due by Dec. 1.

The Angel Tree, providing gifts for PVEN referrals, is set to be up as of this past Friday.

And care packages for college students are also being put together by the church family.

Advent workshop

McMichaels UMC is holding an Advent workshop to decorate the church, tree, and outside on Saturday. A covered-dish supper will take place at 4 p.m. and folks are asked to bring a dish to share. Hot dogs will be provided.

Santa visits

Next week Friday and Saturday, Santa will make at least two visits to the West End. On Dec. 6, he will be visiting the Chestnuthill Township Park from 6 to 8 p.m. There will be crafts, music, cookies and cocoa from 6 to 8 p.m. as well as gifts, as per donations.

Families are reminded to bring a camera for pictures with Santa.

On Saturday, from 4 to 5 p.m., Santa will be at the Ross Township Building on Anchorage Road in Saylorsburg. The event includes a gingerbread craft, cookies and cocoa.

And again a camera is suggested so families can get pictures of their young one with Santa.

Holiday party

The West End Democrats Club holiday party will be held at 6 p.m. Dec. 7, at the West End Fire House, Route 715 in Brodheadsville.

Yule Ball

The Western Pocono Community Library is hosting its first Yule Ball from 7 to 10 p.m. on Dec. 7.

It will include snacks, dancing, a basket raffle and photo booth.

Formal or semiformal attire is requested.

Old Time Christmas

Quiet Valley, Monroe County’s historical farm, is hosting its Old Time Christmas on Dec. 7 and Dec. 8, and again Dec. 14 and 15.

Tours are given every 15 minutes, beginning at 3 p.m.

In addition, the event includes candlelight, traditional carols, the live Nativity, a Victorian skit, a cabin story, the visit of the Belschnikel a bonfire, complimentary refreshments and an opportunity to shop for some special gifts.

Blue Christmas

Salem UCC, Gilbert, is holding a 2 p.m. Blue Christmas service Dec. 8.

Welcome especially are those who have suffered a loss through death or divorce, have a family member or themselves are suffering an illness, have relationship problems, have lost a job or are having financial problems.

The service offers comfort, peace, renewal and a time of fellowship, with light refreshments, afterward.

Pork and sauerkraut

The Western Pocono Lions Club is holding a fundraising pork and sauerkraut dinner from noon to 2 p.m. Jan. 1, 2020, at Zion Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville New Year’s Day.

The meal includes pork, sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, green beans, applesauce, roll and a dessert.
