Volunteers needed to place Memorial Day flags in Schuylkill

Published February 13. 2020 01:56PM

The Schuylkill County Veterans’ Affairs Office is getting its flags in a row.

During a meeting Wednesday, the Schuylkill County Commissioners approved purchasing 39,600 flags at a cost of 58 cents per flag or $22,968 — just $268 more than last year’s cost.

During the weeks leading up to Memorial Day, volunteers are needed to place flags on veterans’ graves.

Last year, the list of organizations willing to volunteer help and time dropped from 67 to 42. Individuals or members of groups that would like to help are asked to call the Schuylkill County Veterans’ Affairs office at 570-628-1400.

In other action, the commissioners:

Approved an agreement with the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Association for the award of $147,617 in state funding, which will be used to enhance shared dispatch protocols and GIS data development projects.

Hired Stephen Sedesse, Tower City, as electrician/general laborer, at a rate of $19.15 per hour.

Approved an annual renewal for a $6,302 contract with Relias Learning, for online training for county corrections officers.
