One killed when truck strikes disabled vehicle

A Lackawanna County man was killed when the disabled vehicle he was a passenger in was struck by a tractor-trailer along Interstate 81 in Dorrance Township, Luzerne County. State police at Hazleton said the crash occurred at 5:40 a.m. Sunday in the northbound lanes.

Troopers said a 2005 Chevrolet Monte Carlo was operated by Jesse David Mayne, 22, of Eynon, Lackawanna County, was northbound when it was involved in a crash, disabling it. Erby Lewis Sims, 53, of Chicago, was driving a 2013 Volvo tractor northbound and struck the Monte Carlo. A passenger in the Monte Carlo, James Douglas Walsh, 21, of Peckville, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mayne was taken to the Geisinger Wyoming Valley Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Sims and his passenger, Marcus Williams, 25, also of Chicago, were not injured.

The interstate was closed for about five hours due to the crash. The investigation into the crash is continuing, troopers added.
