Woman in prison after stealing items from Salvation Army

A Tamaqua area woman was lodged in the Schuylkill County prison in Pottsville after she stole several items from the Tamaqua Salvation Army.

Karlie S. Whispell, 18, of the Pines Motel in Rush Township, broke into a second floor apartment at 105 W. Broad St., on Feb. 8 and stole an HP Pavilion laptop, a silver iPad mini, a red iPad, five flash drives, a bank bag contained $1,500 in checks made out to the Salvation Army and $90 in cash. The theft was captured on video surveillance.

Whispell was arrested at the motel on Feb. 11. She told police where to find several of the stolen items, including the laptop and iPad mini. The motel owner provided police with the iPad and an iPhone that Whispell had given him in lieu of rent.

She was arraigned before District Judge Stephen Bayer, of Tamaqua, on charges of burglary, criminal trespass, theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property and simple trespass. The judge set bail at $10,000, 10 percent, which she was unable to post.
