Baby-sitting course set for BMHS

Published May 24. 2016 12:26PM

Blue Mountain Health System will offer a Safe Sitter course for young teens 11 and up from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 25 in the Education Classroom at the Gnaden Huetten Campus, 211 N. 12th St. in Lehighton. Registration deadline is June 3.

The goal of Safe Sitter is to reduce the number of avoidable and unintentional deaths among children being cared for by baby sitters. Over 650,000 adolescent baby sitters across the country have been trained by Safe Sitter to handle life-threatening emergencies.

All information is taught by trained Safe Sitter instructors. During the course, students will receive hands-on practice in basic lifesaving techniques so they are prepared to act in a crisis.

Participants will also receive helpful tips that will make them more confident caregivers, plus information on child development and age-appropriate activities.

They will learn safety and security precautions, such as what to do if a stranger comes to the door; when and how to call for help; and the business aspect of baby-sitting.

To successfully complete the Safe Sitter program, students must pass a rigorous practical and written test to show that they have mastered the key concepts and have the skills necessary to handle an emergency.

The cost is $35 and includes all resource materials and supplies, including a Safe Sitter backpack, Band-aid dispenser with Band-aids, flashlight, important numbers pad, completion card, snacks and lunch.

Space is limited and registration and prepayment are required. To register your son or daughter for the Safe Sitter course, call community education at Blue Mountain Health System at 610-377-7070.
