Rush-Ryan seniors

The Rush, Ryan and Delano Senior Citizens Inc. met June 23 at the Ryan Township Fire Company in Barnesville, with 50 members in attendance. The business session was conducted by President Eleanor Schmerfeld.

The invocation "Each day You Live" was given by chaplain Kathleen Valentine.

Birthday greetings were offered to Joan Brown, Penny Schlorf, Melody Weicker and Bill Morrison. Readings were given by Shirley Becker and Ruthann Feane.

The group meets the second and fourth Tuesday of every month at the fire company. The next meeting will be held on July 14. Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join.

TASD news

Tamaqua Area School District students participating in sports and/or any extracurricular activity, or who have a school parking permit are subject to random drug and alcohol testing, as established in 2010. Random drug testing of nonparticipating students is also available if the district receives a parental request. Students must provide a signed parental consent form before participating.

For the 2015-16 school year, initial registration/testing will take place on July 29 and 30, from 8 to 10:30 a.m., in the athletic center locker rooms of the middle school.

Any student who cannot attend on the dates provided should call 570-668-1901 or contact Mike Hromyak, athletic director at mhromyak@tamaqua.k12.pa.us, or assistant principal Tom McCabe at tmccabe@tamaqua.k12.pa.us for other arrangements.

Becoming part of the random selection process is necessary before participating in any activities.

Heisler's concerts

Heisler's Dairy Bar in the Lewistown Valley is continuing its tradition of hosting "A Night in the Country Concert Series." Free concerts will be held on various weekend nights, featuring various artists.

The next event will be a concert by "Jerry Heines," from 5-7 p.m. July 12.

Additional dates will be July 19, Ann Marie Calabrese from 5-9 p.m.; July 16, M&J Big Band from 3-5 p.m.; Aug. 2, Cressona Band from 3-5 p.m.; Aug. 8, KJ from 6-9 p.m.; Aug. 16, Ann Marie Calabrese from 5-9 p.m.; Aug. 22, the New Individuals from 7-9 p.m.

No outside food or beverages are allowed but lawn chairs are encouraged.

Also at Heisler's, the Tamaqua Street Machine Association will hold car cruises from 5-8 p.m. on July 18 and Aug. 15.

Zion Lewistown

Pastor Jim Williams will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. service this Sunday in Zion Church in the Lewistown Valley. Sunday school classes will be held at 9:15 a.m.

Bible study sessions are held every Thursday at 12:30 p.m.

Also, the OWLS will meet on July 9 in the social hall for Christmas in July.

Zion Lutheran

Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church offers a contemporary-style service at 5:30 p.m., on Saturdays. The service is held in the church social hall in an informal, welcoming setting. This Saturday's service will mark a special occasion, the 100th such service. It will be followed by a time of food and fellowship, including a free, light lunch.

Sunday worship services are held at 9 a.m.
