Blood drives today

Cornerstone Community Church, 388 Polk Township Road, Kresgeville will hold an American Red Cross blood drive from 1-6 p.m. today.

Blood and double red cells will be accepted.

In addition, on Thursday another American Red Cross blood drive will be held at the Pocono Medical Center West End Health Care Center on Burrus Road in Brodheadsville, from noon to 5 p.m.

Also on Wednesday, from noon to 6 p.m. help save lives by donating whole blood or blood platelets at Western Pocono Community Library. For questions or to make an appointment with The Miller-Keystone Blood Center call 800-223-6667. Walk-ins are also welcome.

The is a weekly occurrence.

Altar and Rosary

The Altar & Rosary Society of Our Lady Queen of Peace will have its monthly at 6:30 p.m. today in either the Café or McCawley Hall.

Fall baseball

Registrations are now being accepted for fall baseball for league ages 8-13, Baseball League age 8- to 10-year-olds Little League Division, Baseball League age 11- to 13-year-olds 50/70 Division.

In-person registration is Thursday from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Chestnuthill Park Building in Brodheadsville or mail the following information to: West End Little League, P.O Box 1051, Effort, PA 18330

All registrations must be received by Saturday. Registrations will not be accepted after that date.

Include the child's name, complete birth date (month, date, year), operating phone number, email, spring team name, and shirt size with $35 check payable to: W.E.L.L.

Playing will start the beginning of September and runs through Nov. 1, weather permitting.

PV Clothing Swap

Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m., those who are eligible, by having a voucher for the amount of standardized clothing and they have brought in to various PV schools main office, will be able to redeem vouchers until noon.

Thursday is the last day for acceptance into the swap program. Articles must be laundered.

Meeting tonight

The Chestnuthill Township Historical Society's meeting is at 6 tonight at the township park building on Route 715.

The Chestnuthill Township Planning Commission will meet at 7 p.m. at the township building.

Family Fun Night

Another family fun night has been scheduled for Thursday, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Eldred YMCA, located in the Eldred Community Center in Kunkletown.

This month's activity is basketball.

Chestnuthill Seniors

The menu for the Chestnuthill Seniors, meeting in Zion Lutheran's Fellowship Hall in Brodheadsville, includes meatloaf this Friday and sautéed beef and broccoli next Wednesday.

Participants are reminded to call the site manager Dolores Casalaspro at 570-242-6770 or 570-420-3735 for meal reservations by 11 a.m. one day in advance. The suggested meal donation is $2.

Free float Friday

Mrs. Bush's Personal Care Homes Inc. in Kunkletown is hosting music by James Hummel and free root beer floats at 2 p.m. Friday. Tours of the Bush home is also available.

Effort Food Pantry

Effort UMC's Supplemental Food Resource Center will be open from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.

A valid driver's license or state ID with address proving residency in the West End is required.

Smart Driver course

The next AARP Smart Driver course will be held Saturday at the Chestnuthill Park Building in Brodheadsville, beginning at 1 p.m.

There are no tests, and membership in AARP is not necessary. One must have proof of having taken the 8-hour course within the past 3 years.

There is a $20 fee, though it is $15 for AARP members.

All automobile insurance companies doing business in Pennsylvania are required by law to give a minimum discount of 5 percent to all qualified policyholders age 55 and over who take the course. The discount is for a minimum of three years.

Class size is limited so advance reservations are necessary.

Vesper service

The Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network is again hosting the Vesper service at the West End Fair on Sunday. It will begin at 5 p.m.

Chestnuthill supervisors

The Chestnuthill Township board of supervisors will meet at 7:30 a.m. Monday for bill paying purposes only.

Backpack sharing

Pleasant Valley Assembly of God is partnering with Trinity Church in Harlem, New York, in an effort to provide a backpack with school supplies for a child in the elementary school. Church members and friends can be a blessing and make a difference. The church is asking people to donate $25, which will cover the cost of one backpack with school supplies.

Donations were received last Sunday and will be again this Sunday. Bring donations to the welcome tent where church administrator Olga will receive them.

Busy at fair

The family and friends of Salem St. Paul's Lutheran Church are busy at the West End Fair this week as are many other churches. Twenty percent of profits will benefit World Hunger and PVEN.

Mini fashion show

The Western Pocono Lioness will meet Tuesday at the American Legion in Gilbert beginning at 6:30 p.m.

The program is a mini fashion show by Dress Barn.

That is a small preview of the annual Lioness Fashion Show fundraiser on Sept. 20 at Hideaway Hills Golf Club in Kresgeville. The event begins at noon and tickets can be obtained by calling Lioness Nancy at 570-992-7522 or Lioness Carol at 610-681-8135. The cost includes lunch as well as the fashion show.

Pocono Pony at fair

Monroe County Transit Authority will be at the West End Fair with various free special activities.

The include: Spin the Wheel, Sunday, Wednesday and Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m.; Monday and Tuesday 3 to 6 p.m.; Thursday and Friday 3 to 9:30 p.m.

Shuffle Board, Sunday 5 to 9:30 p.m.; Monday and Tuesday 7 to 9:30 p.m.; Wednesday 1 to 4 p.m.; Saturday 5 to 9:30 p.m.

Pictures with Miles, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 4:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Volunteers feted

Monroe County Habitat for Humanity's Volunteer Appreciation Event will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Sept. 15 at Water Gap Country Club.

Anyone who has volunteered one time in the past year is invited free of charge. A light dinner will be served with coffee, tea, soda and desserts. There will be a cash bar.
