An estimated one in four Americans has a diagnosable mental illness.

Depression can be particularly dangerous because, left untreated, it can have fatal consequences.

Women are twice as likely as men to experience depression.

"The reason for this is unknown, but changes in a woman's hormone levels may be related to depression," states the American Academy of Family Physicians.

According to the National Institutes for Health, genetics research indicates that risk for depression results from the influence of several genes acting together with environmental or other factors. In addition, trauma, loss of a loved one, a difficult relationship, or any stressful situation may trigger a depressive episode.

The Tamaqua Community Arts Center will host a Mental Health First Aid session, an eight-hour course targeted for those with direct contact with the public in a professional or volunteer capacity.

The course will take place 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on March 27 at 125 Pine St.

Seating is limited. More information, 570-668-1192.
