AARP driver class

This Saturday and next, from 1 to 5 p.m., an AARP Driver Safety Class will be offered at the Chestnuthill Park Building in Brodheadsville. It is for drivers 50 and older, but no AARP membership is required. There is a registration fee.

Class is taught by an unpaid, trained volunteer.

A four-hour refresher course, for those who have taken the full course in the past three years, will be offered May 16 at the Chestnuthill Park Building.

Lenten services

Effort UMC will hold its Lenten service at 7 p.m. It is based on Matthew 27:15-17. The Lenten Study 2015: 24 Hours That Changed the World by Adam Hamilton is held on Wednesday at 5:45 p.m. before the Lenten services. Soup and salad will be served.

The Rev. Suzanne Brooks-Cope from St. Matthew's UCC in Kunkletown will preach at the five-church joint Lenten service being held this week at Jerusalem UCC in Trachsville. The theme for the Lenten series is: The Parables of Jesus.

A soup supper will be served at 6 p.m. Participants may bring a sandwich. Drinks and dessert are provided. A freewill offering will be taken.

Zion Lutheran, Brodheadsville, continues with its midweek Lenten supper and Bible study at 6:15 p.m. and a Lenten worship contemplative prayer service at 7:30 p.m.

PIC meets

Pride in Chestnuthill will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Chestnuthill Township Municipal Building, Brodheadsville.

School board

The Pleasant Valley School District Board of Education will meet at 8 p.m. Thursday in the administrative center in Brodheadsville.

Monroe Seniors

The menu for Chestnut Hill Seniors meeting at Zion Lutheran in Brodheadsville calls for stuffed shells on Friday and chicken stew next Wednesday. Participants must be sure to call the center manager at 570-242-6770 by 11 a.m. the day before.

Food pantry open

The Supplemental Food Resource Center at Effort UMC will be open from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. This church outreach is for families in Effort, Gilbert, Kunkletown, Kresgeville, Brodheadsville, Saylorsburg, Sciota and Albrightsville, who are going through emergency or other short-term situations that are not eligible for local, county or state programs. Help is limited to a 12-week lifetime duration per family. A valid driver's license or state ID with address proving residency in the West End is required.

Day of Prayer

Local pastors and Lay Ministers of the Pocono Pleasant Valley School District/West End, are invited to Pastors & Ministry Leaders Day of Prayer from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Mountaintop Christian Community Church, 113 Pilgrim Way in Brodheadsville.

The Rev. Michael Quinnan, Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, will give the address regarding the history and future of Keep Sunday Holy as well as the opening prayer.

Clothing swap

Pleasant Valley Elementary School, Kresgeville, is holding its clothing swap Saturday.

Adoption Day

Safe Haven Pet Rescue will hold an adoption day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at Tractor Supply in Brodheadsville. A pre-adoption application with references and a home visit are required before adoption.

Those interesting in volunteering with Safe Haven are welcome to meet at Cherry's Family Restaurant at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Umpire clinic

West End Little League will hold an umpire clinic Sunday beginning at 4 p.m. at the PVHS Old Gymnasium. All coaches and any parents who will be umpiring are strongly encouraged to attend for workbond points.

Piecemakers meet

The quilting and crafting group hosted by Cornerstone Community Church in Kresgeville, meets from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Monday. Ann Marie Lambert, a local quilting teacher, guides the group.

Attendees should bring their own sewing machine and a project to work on; or one can take advantage of using a provided kit and then donate the finished project to Quilts for Kids.

Women's Club

On Monday the GFWC Western Pocono Women's Club will resume its monthly meetings. Molly Getz will talk about how she hand-paints designs on eggs and other objects. They will also enjoy a delicious Wearin' of the Green dessert buffet.

On the second Wednesday of the month, on a monthly basis, the club holds a cookie and juice social at Getz Personal Care Home in Jonas.

The club meets at 7 p.m. on the third Monday of each month, March through December, at Effort United Methodist Church on Merwinsburg Road in Effort. It is open to all women 18 years and older.

Effort UMC's knitters and crocheters will meet Tuesday, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Newcomers are welcome.

Free music event

Mrs. Bush's Personal Care Homes, Inc., Kunkletown, is holding an intergenerational program for children of all ages: free Music Therapy with Bridget on Tuesday 10:30 a.m. Bridget will engage both generations in a fun hour music program with instruments and singing.

Eldred Township's Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Chestnuthill meets

The Chestnuthill Township Board of Supervisors will meet at 7 p.m., Tuesday, at the municipal building in Brodheadsville. The planning commission meets next Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the municipal building.

PVI PTO

The Pleasant Valley Intermediate School PTO will meet at 4:30 p.m., next Wednesday.

Lions meet

The Western Pocono Lions Club will meet at 7 p.m. next Wednesday for its monthly dinner meeting at Old Mill Pizza. The gathering time is 6:30 p.m. The speaker will be Jennifer Strauch, director of the Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network.

Rotary speaker

West End Rotary Club will meet at 7:30 a.m. Thursday at the Western Pocono Community Library in Brodheadsville. The speaker will be Josephine Ferro.

Soccer league

The West End Soccer League board meeting will be held beginning at 7 p.m., March 19, in the ShopRite Community Room at Kinsley's ShopRite in Brodheadsville.

PVHS musical

Pleasant Valley High School will present "Shrek, the Musical!" at 7 p.m. March 20 and 21 and at 2 p.m. March 22. Tickets will be available at the door or by contacting ring.carol@pvbears.org.

Monroe County Habitat for Humanity invites area volunteers and new volunteers to sign up and/or help at Monroe County Habitat for Humanity booth at the Home Show at ESU this Saturday and Sunday.

Valentine honored

Jo Valentine, Effort, outgoing treasurer for the Monroe Animal League, was one of the honorees recognized by the league for extraordinary years of service along with outgoing president Nancy Jones of Stroudsburg. President Ned Ramm presented plaques to thank them for their service at the February meeting. Geraldine Pinali, is the outgoing vice president.

Incoming officers are Ned Ramm, president, Blakeslee; Robbie Robbins, vice president, Henryville; Donna Oney, treasurer, East Stroudsburg; and Janis Grimaldi, secretary, Stroudsburg.

Free program

Pocono Medical Center will present a program on Advanced Care Planning at the Western Pocono Community Library in Brodheadsville from 1 to 2:30 p.m., April 1.

The program will provide brief discussions by Dr. Rose Guilbe, medical director of Palliative Care; Jill Howell, medical art therapist; Lori J. Cerato, Pocono Health Systems Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care.

Teri Gaglione, LSW, Supervisor of Support Service, will provide resource information.

Hunter-Trapper course

The Indian Mountain Rod & Gun Club, Kresgeville, will sponsor a Pennsylvania Game Commission Hunter-Trapper Education event at the club on Route 534 in Kresgeville on April 11, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The one day event requires online study before attendance. Register online at: http://www.pgc.state.pa.us. There is limited seating and the minimum registration age is 11.

The certification earned is required by Pennsylvania law for all first-time hunters.

Lunch will be available at the course for a nominal fee.
