Eagle fundraiser

Max Gemmell of Saylorsburg is doing his Eagle Scout project for the American Legion Post 927 in Gilbert.

A member of Boy Scout Troop 102, he will be repairing the pavilion behind the Legion with help from other Scouts. The project will include painting, patching holes on the roof, and replacing glass windows, as well as other improvements.

He is having a pasta dinner fundraiser at the Legion in Gilbert from 4 to 8 p.m. April 25 to aid the financial needs of the project. The Western Pocono Lions Clubs has already given him a helping hand.

Blood drive

The Miller-Keystone blood drive held each Wednesday at the Western Pocono Community Library in Brodheadsville continues through 6 p.m. today.

WEPOSC meets

The West End Park and Open Space Commission Friends group meets at 6 p.m. today. The WEPOSC leadership will meet at 7 p.m.

Both groups meet at the Chestnuthill Park Building in Brodheadsville.

PV schedule

The Pleasant Valley Elementary School in Kresgeville will hold Planet Learn at Kindergarten Night at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

At the high school in Brodheadsville, the band parents will meet at 7 p.m. in the band room.

The Board of Education meets at 8 p.m. in the administrative center in Brodheadsville.

Lioness board

The Western Pocono Lioness Club's board meeting is at noon Thursday at Cherry's Family Restaurant in Kresgeville. All members are welcome. Any club member considering running for a position is invited to come.

Garden volunteering

The Garden of Giving will hold its first volunteer day Saturday to open the garden, and on April 18 volunteers will be planting onions and cold-season crops. Food pantry open

Supplemental Food Resource Center, a ministry sponsored by Effort UMC, will be open on Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. One must live in a prescribed area.

Benefit clinic

A pet vaccine clinic will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Creature Comforts Veterinary Service in Saylorsburg to benefit the West End Relay for Life.

Volunteers needed

Hunter-trapper course

The Indian Mountain Rod & Gun Club in Kresgeville will sponsor a Pennsylvania Game Commission Hunter-Trapper Education event at the club on Route 534 in Kresgeville from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

The one-day requires registration at www.pgc.state.pa.us/ and online study prior to attendance.

There is limited seating and the minimum registration age is 11.

The certification earned is required by Pennsylvanian law for all first-time hunters.

Lunch will be available at the course for a nominal fee.

Outreach auction

The Missions Committee of Effort UMC will hold its annual Outreach Auction at 7 p.m. Saturday in Wesley Hall. Proceeds from the auction will benefit church-sponsored missionaries in Bolivia (the Zimmerman family), the Youth REACH mission trip and Volunteers in Missions. All auction items are donated by members or friends of EUMC.

Pastor Robin Fisher and Mark Wells will serve as auctioneers for such items as handmade craft or needleworks; handmade wooden or ceramic items; homemade cookies, cakes, breads and candies; knitted or crocheted items; framed paintings and drawings from several local artists; an overnight stay at the Lake view Lodge for up to 14 people; gift certificates from local merchants, and many theme baskets.

Dog adoption

Safe Haven Pet Rescue will hold a dog adoption day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, at Ace Hardware on Route 209 in Brodheadsville (next to Dunkelberger's).

There will be many young dogs available. Safe Haven requires a pre-adoption application with references and a home visit before adoption.

Library Week

The Western Pocono Community Library has several things planned for National Library Week, which begins Sunday. For more information visit the library or the library's calendar on the web.

Meet & Greet

Camp Papillon will hold a meet and greet and adoption day from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Tractor Supply on Route 209 in Brodheadsville. People are invited to meet the dogs, cats and critters that Camp Papillon has for adoption.

Legion events

Several groups will meet at the Legion Post home in Gilbert during the next week.

The schedule calls for the 927 Riders to meet at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, and the S.A.L. at 6:30 p.m.

The Auxiliary is slated to meet at 6 p.m. Monday and the Korean War Vets at 7 p.m.

Troop 102, Boy Scouts of America, is chartered by the Home Association.

Sunday fun

Salem-St. Paul's is having a fun event Sunday for its church family. That fun includes a noon Easter egg hunt, pizza lunch and movie plus a Youth Planning Meeting.

Divine Mercy

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church in Gilbert will hold a Divine Mercy Sunday Devotion at 4 p.m. Sunday.

There will be a time for Adoration, with Benediction and prayers dedicated to the Divine Mercy of Christ.

UMW meets

Effort UMC's United Methodist Women will meet Monday. Hostesses are Rosalie and Dee Juris. Devotions will be provided by Fran Wylie, and the program is Emergency Management.

The group is also collecting items for the cheer baskets. A tote will be placed in the narthex for donations.

All Sports Club

The All Sports Club meets at 7 p.m. Monday in the Pleasant Valley High School library.

Rep's outreach hours

Rep. Jack Rader is holding outreach hours in several locations in April.

A representative from his office will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Chestnuthill Township Building on Route 715 in Brodheadsville.

Knit & Crochet

Zion Lutheran's Knit & Crochet Group meets at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Parish Hall. Newcomers are welcome, including those who cannot knit or crochet. Experienced folks will teach. Supplies can be given.

Hoodies for Heroes

A collection of hooded sweatshirts (new or used) to benefit the homeless veterans and Valor Clinic (Paul's House) continues through April 30 at Effort UMC.

Drop a hooded sweatshirt in the baskets located in the church narthex.

There is also a need for hiking shoes for men size 8 to 12 and for women 6 to 10. Contact the church at 570-629-1890.

Polk Planning

The Polk Township Planning Commission meets at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Meeting time is subject to change. Call the township office at 570-681-5376.

Two PV meetings

The Pleasant Valley High School PAC meeting will be held at 10 a.m. April 15, and the Pleasant Valley Intermediate School PTO will meet at 4:30 p.m. on April 15.

Veggie news

The Chestnuthill Seniors, meeting at Zion Lutheran in Brodheadsville, will have a special program at 11 a.m. at the group's April 15 meeting titled: The Veggie (tomato) That's a Fruit.

The menu that day calls for meatloaf. This Friday's menu is spaghetti and meatballs.

Lunch attendees are reminded to call the site manager by 11 a.m., a day ahead.

Scholarship deadline

The application for the West End Park and Open Space Commission's two $1,000 Dave Fleetwood scholarships is due next Wednesday. Scholarships will recognize Pleasant Valley graduates who exemplify the attributes of Fleetwood.

Applications and guidelines are available from the guidance office or by request to bkozen@weposc.org. Applications must be received by the commission by April 15.

Lions meet

The Western Pocono Lions Club will have its monthly dinner meeting at 7 p.m. April 15 at the Olde Mill Pizza in Sciota. Gathering time is at 6:30 p.m.

Hoops for Heart

Pleasant Valley Intermediate students had good results from their Hoops for Heart event, raising $4,220 for the American Heart Association to help the fight against heart disease.

Donations help

Eldred Township is seeking gently used furniture in very good condition to be donated to the community gathering room. The township would like to have seating areas for visiting, clubs, charitable groups, etc. to use. Also needed are plants, books in good condition, etc.
