Market vouchers
The 2015 Senior Farm Market Nutrition Program, which provides eligible older adults with vouchers for use at farm markets, will begin distributing the vouchers this month. Vouchers provide health benefits to low-income seniors by providing them with locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables. The program is also designed to expand the awareness and use of farmers markets.
In Tamaqua, vouchers will be distributed Wednesday at the Tamaqua Salvation Army, 105 W. Broad St. from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Only farmers authorized by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture may accept and redeem SFMNP checks. There are more than 1,000 FMNP participating farmers at 800 farm stands and 190 farmers markets in Pennsylvania.
To be eligible, seniors must be 60 or older by Dec. 31, 2015, and meet income guidelines
In addition to voucher distribution, representatives from Schuylkill Transportation System will be attending most of the events to share information and assist seniors in registering for the transportation service.
The 2015 voucher program is administered by Diakon Community Services, which also provides APPRISE counselors to assist Medicare beneficiaries with low-income subsidy applications. Proof of eligibility is required.
