Generations have enjoyed "The Sound of Music," the movie musical which brought the story of Austria's Von Trapp Family Singers to the big screen.

Most of us know the general plot line, as fictionalized in the movie. Maria, in training to become a nun, instead becomes the governess and later the wife of Captain Georg Von Trapp.

The two and their seven children flee the Nazi regime by sneaking away during a music festival, trekking over the Alps into Switzerland.

The players of the Carbon Schuylkill Community Theatre will bring the musical to the stage with three performances this weekend: 7 p.m. Friday, and 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday, at the Tamaqua Community Art Center, 125 Pine St., Tamaqua.

Admission is $10, or $8 for students and seniors.

Kelly Surotchak will play Sister Margaretta, and her five children, Elizabeth, Nicholas, Carson, Andrew and Brooklyn, have roles as the Von Trapp children.

"It's something nice because it's something we can all do together," Surotchak said before a dress rehearsal Wednesday night.

"It's been a real family adventure."

Another family connection is Shirley Rodgers and her son Jonathan, who play Ursula and Captain Von Trapp, respectively.

Shirley Rodgers joked that although memorizing lines takes a little longer every year, she enjoys the work of preparation.

"It's good, clean fun and it keeps the kids occupied," she said.

"This is a performance that the whole family will enjoy."

Other cast members include: Kylie Kresge as Louisa, Mikayla Blakeslee as Liesl, Marie Evan and Brigitta, Katie Evans as Maria, Karen Tartar as Frau Schmidt, Chanita Guerrero as Elsa Schraeder and Stephen Hajcak as Rolf Gruber.

Also, Jen Betz as Sister Berthe, Brenda Fritzinger as Sister Sophia, Zane Bachert as Admiral Von Schreiber, Kevin Killian as Herr Zellner, Jake Tokosh as Max Detweiler and Martha Cox as Mother Abbess.

In addition to performing, Tokosh and Hajcak are co-directing the musical.
