Art exhibit this weekend and next
This weekend and next visitors to Jim Thorpe's annual Fall Foliage Festival are welcome to take in a unique art exhibit at the Dimmick Memorial Library annex at 58 Broadway.
The show is hosted by the Carbon County Art League in cooperation with the library.
Art league President Kathy Gellentien says it's a show people won't want to miss.
"There will be a few new types of art," says Gellentien, "such as glass sculptures. These pieces are a very different art medium."
Gellentien says the exhibit, which includes over 170 pieces, also features several excellent depictions of the historic town of Jim Thorpe.
"Several of our local artists are extremely good at realism," she adds.
Art to be exhibited includes photography, acrylics, oils, sculpture, 3D medium, jewelry and watercolor.
All of the work will be judged before the opening of the exhibit. The judge for this show is an art instructor from East Stroudsburg University.
The exhibit will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Saturday and Sunday, and again next weekend, Oct. 11 and Oct. 12.
An opening reception will take place from noon until 2 p.m. Saturday, at which time the winners will be announced.
The exhibit and the reception are free.
During the event, the art league will offer a Hershey Kiss Game, where patrons can purchase 10 chocolate kisses and may be eligible to win prizes worth up to $150. All of the proceeds from the game will benefit the art league.
Gellentien says the league is always ready to welcome new members, especially some of the county's younger residents. High school students with a proven interest in art and parental permission may join the art league and be eligible for all events and programs it offers.
In order to join you must be high school age or above and live in Carbon County. Membership is $20 a year, and $15 a year for students.
The art league meets at 6:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday of the month (except for January, February and March), at the Penn Kidder Senior Center on Route 903 near the intersection of Behrens Road.
Meetings include a business meeting, a presentation or demonstration and a mixer. Members are welcome to bring work to be critiqued.
