Blood drive today
An American Red Cross blood drive is being held today, from 1 to 6 p.m. at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church in Gilbert. Visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS to schedule an appointment if any are still available.
Rotary speaker
West End Rotary meets at 7:30 a.m. on Thursdays in the community room of the Western Pocono Community Library, Route 209 in Brodheadsville. This Thursday the club will hear a presentation by Dawn Daignault from the Human Resource Center in Effort.

The Western Pocono Lioness Club has received acknowledgments from among entities they have helped financially. Among them are Western Pocono Community Library, Habitat for Humanity, Kunkletown Fire Company, West End Fire Company, Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network, West End Park & Open Space Commission, Leader Dogs for the Blind, Center for Vision Loss, VNA Hospice, Pleasant Valley High School (for Special Olympics), Effort United Methodist Church (for Supplemental Resource Center Food Pantry) and Meals on Wheels.
In order to replenish the treasury, preparation for the August West End Fair participation, the club's flea market and the September fashion show is gathering momentum.
A minifashion show preview will be part of the August meeting.
In addition, members of the club are planning to tour the North Eastern Pennsylvania Lion's Eye Bank in August.

Saturday devotion
First Saturday Devotion to Our Blessed Mother will be held this Saturday at Our Lady Queen of Peace in the Daily Chapel after the 8 a.m. Communion Service.
Special guest
The Western Pocono Community Library will host special guest Janene Holter for its Truth and Choices and Consequences Summer Reading Program at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
Prayer Shawl
Ministry
Effort UMC's prayer shawl ministry meetings are held on the first and third Tuesdays of the month. The next meeting is 10:30 a.m. next Tuesday.

The West End membership of Monroe County Seniors will meet at 9 a.m. Aug. 6 and Aug. 9.

Youth Field Day
Monroe County Youth Field Day will again take place at Camp Trexler in Jonas from 6:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 6, rain or shine.
It is open to Pennsylvania boys and girls, ages 8-14.
The events will include: obstacle course, archery range, fishing, .22 rifle range, dog handling, shotgun range, boating safety, wildlife art and more.
All equipment is provided. There will also be outdoor displays and demonstrations. Only the first 225 applicants are accepted. For an application contact Angela Schwartz at ASchwartz@MCYFD.org or call 610-681-6184.
Free registration, T-shirts, hats, lunch and door prizes are part of the day.
Each child must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian while attending the event.
Community Day
Chestnuthill Township will celebrate its annual Community Day from noon to 5 p.m. Sept. 21 at the Chestnuthill Township Park, Route 715 in Brodheadsville. It will include games, demonstrations, entertainment, food and drink, music and more.
Free admission. All residents are welcome.
Donations sought
Help is being requested for the Valor Clinic food pantry. Donations for the homeless veterans the Valor Clinic serves, of vegetables, fruits, tuna fish, peanut butter, applesauce and juices, all in pouches or flip-top containers only, may be placed in a barrel at the American Legion Post Home 927 in Gilbert.
