Flag program

The Summit Hill Lions Club is continuing its American flag program. Throughout the good weather months, the flag will fly in Ludlow Park in memory or honor of veterans from the community.

Family members of veterans, or veterans themselves, can request to be scheduled by contacting Joseph O'Gurek at 570-645-5171.

Next week the flag will fly in memory of Joseph J. George, who served as a first lieutenant with the 28th Armored Division of Pennsylvania during World War II, with active duty from 1941 until he was killed in the battlefields of Germany on Oct. 13, 1944.

George trained for infantry service at Camp Croft, North Carolina; was selected for Officers Candidate School, where he was then commissioned at Ft. Benning, Georgia; and was later transferred to Fort Walters, Texas.

He was stationed in the states until June 1943, when he requested transfer overseas to a unit destined for combat.

A tri-sport athlete at the former Summit Hill High School, he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied law and was a member of the baseball team and the 150-pound football team.
