Free backpack
The Pleasant Valley Assembly of God Church, Brodheadsville, just off Weir Lake Road, will hold a free back-to-school event from 3 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 6. The first 100 children will get a free backpack filled with school supplies.
Garden of Giving
The Garden of Giving in McMichaels is producing a bounty of crops, including fresh organic garlic, onions, cucumbers, green and fryer peppers, eggplant, parsley, basil, and also eggs. The fall crop will be ready for harvesting at the end of September through the fall.
As a United Way partner, the garden is looking forward to the third involvement in United Way Day of Caring, a one-day event for the community to come together to provide hands-on services to the United Way, its partner agencies, and other local nonprofits. That will take place on Thursday, Sept. 11.
At the end of the day a thank-you picnic will be held at Barley Creek Brewing Company in Tannersville for all who participate. For more information visit www.unitedwaymonroe.org/day-caring-0.
A work day for volunteers at the garden will take place from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 27. Anyone interested in helping can call 570-402-1282. The garden can use chicken feed, volunteers to help with the chickens, in the office, on the website, in the Garden and at fundraising events.

Library movie
The Saturday feature for this week at the Western Pocono Community Library is slated to be: Saving Mr. Banks (PG-13). The movie will begin promptly at 1 p.m. and will be shown in the Community Room.
Children under 10 years must be accompanied by an adult.
West End Rotary
The West End Rotary Club will have no meeting Thursday due to the West End Fair. The club is once again providing wheelchairs, both electric and manual, at the fair Aug. 24-30 at the fairgrounds, Route 209 and Fairgrounds Road, Gilbert. The Rotary booth is located to the left of the main entrance on Farm Machinery Road.
CJERP meets
The Chestnuthill-Jackson-Eldred-Ross-Polk Regional Comprehensive meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Chestnuthill Township Municipal building in Brodheadsville.
PV School Board
The Pleasant Valley School District Board of Education will meet at 8 p.m., Thursday, in the administrative center in Brodheadsville.
Monroe Seniors
The West End group of the Monroe County Seniors meet at 9 a.m. Wednesdays and Fridays.
Blood drive
A Miller-Keystone blood drive is held at the Western Pocono Community Library from noon to 6 p.m. every Wednesday. For an appointment, call 1-800-223-6667. Walk-ins are welcomed also.
School begins
Pleasant Valley schools will be session for the first day of the new school year on Tuesday. There will also be a kindergarten visitation.
Supervisors to meet
Chestnuthill Township's Board of Supervisors will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
PVEN needs
Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network is in need of toiletries for men and women, including tooth brushes, toothpaste, shampoo and conditioner, and soap.
Donations may be brought to the PVEN Tuesday and Friday mornings from 9 to 11:30 a.m. or to a participating PVEN supporting church. Visit www.pven.net/ for more information and a list of churches.

Valor Clinic needs
The American Legion Post Home in Gilbert is accepting much needed help for the Valor Clinic pantry.
Flip-Top containers or pouches only are requested of the needed vegetables, fruits, tuna fish, peanut butter applesauce and box juices.
The West End Home Association will meet at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 3 at the Legion Post Home.
