Published November 20. 2014 04:00PM

Lehighton Area Middle School Theatre will present "Getting to Know … The Sound of Music,"(an adaptation for young performers), with music by Rodgers and Hammerstein.

Laura Welkey is the director/producer.

Show times are 7:15 p.m. Monday and Tuesday in the middle school auditorium. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students and seniors.

Based on a true story, "The Sound of Music" takes place in 1930s Austria, when a young novice named Maria is called upon to become a governess for the seven children of Captain Georg Von Trapp. The captain's wife is dead, and he is often away, and runs the household as strictly as he does his ship.

The children are unhappy and resentful of the governesses, and have managed to run each of them off one by one. When Maria arrives, she is met with the same hostility, but her kindness, understanding, and sense of fun draw them to her and she brings much-needed joy into their lives.

Eventually the captain and Maria fall in love as Austria is about to come under the control of Germany, and the Captain may soon find himself drafted into the German Navy and forced to fight against his own country.

The production features eighth-grader Madison DeLuca as Maria, and seventh-grader John DeMatte as Captain von Trapp.

The von Trapp children are played by: seventh-graders Kylie Kresge, Calvin Maholick, Alison Miller and Justine Nidlund; sixth-grader Ryley Fahringer; and fifth-graders Megan Aaron and Emily Martin.

Playing other roles are Jaden Scherer (8th) as Rolf, Jazzmin Sicher (7th) as Mother Abbess, Megan Latshaw (8th) as Sister Sophia, Emma McClafferty (8th) as Sister Margaretta, Ashley Beers (6th) as Sister Berthe and Michael Miller (8th) as Max.
